OUTLOOK

Romeo, last year’s Orange League coach of the year, returns only one starter from last year’s team that advanced to the Southern Section III-AA quarterfinals. Losing all-leaguers Barbara Mathews and Whitney Torregano leaves a huge hole on defense and in experience. Romeo says Magnolia will have to overachieve in order to match the accomplishments of last year’s squad. Picchi, the lone returning starter, is back for her fourth year in the starting lineup. She will be joined by Mary and Michelle Tuazon and Chairez, who will help out with ballhandling. Despite Picchi (5-11) and Tewell (5-11), the Sentinels lack physical size. Pickett was last year’s junior varsity MVP and Williams should back up Mary Tuazon at point guard. Romeo says in order for this team to be successful, the newcomers will have to adjust to the varsity level in a hurry. If they avoid injuries, the Sentinels should still be in contention for a return trip to the playoffs.
