Carlos Glade recovered a fumble on the Phelan Serrano 17-yard line with 55 seconds left to preserve a 22-19 Orange Lutheran victory in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division X football playoffs Friday night at Irvine High.

Serrano had first and goal on the seven, but Jimmy Brown sacked Serrano quarterback Russell Anderson and forced the fumble.

Top-seeded Orange Lutheran (10-2) will play San Pedro Mary Star of Sea, a 27-7 winner over Ontario Christian, in the semifinals on Friday.

The Lancers surprised the visiting Diamondbacks on the third play of the game when quarterback Joe Juliano broke over left tackle and ran 75 yards for a touchdown.

With 10 minutes and 25 seconds left in the second quarter, Serrano’s Bryan Elder caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Anderson. The extra-point attempt was wide.

The Diamondbacks took a 13-7 lead with 5:19 left in the first half, when Anderson hit Hobie Jarrard with a nine-yard touchdown pass.

Juliano gave Orange Lutheran a 14-13 lead, when he found Che Holloway open for a 39-yard scoring pass with 48 seconds left in the first half.

Serrano (9-2-1) regained the lead when Michael Carmona broke through for a 62-yard touchdown on the second play of the second half but the extra-point attempt again failed and the Diamondbacks led, 19-14.

Orange Lutheran’s final scoring drive began late in the third quarter and was preserved on a seven-yard run by Juliano on fourth down. Holloway scored from the one with 9:54 left, and Juliano hit Mike Crawford with a two-point conversion pass for the final margin.

The Lancers lost defensive captain Chris Amato with 1:54 left to play.

“He popped his ankle and I doubt if he will be back this season,” Lancer Coach Jim Kunau said.

Juliano rushed for 140 yards and Holloway rushed for 100. Juliano also had 67 yards passing and Holloway completed one pass for 39 yards. Crawford caught four passes for 71 yards.
