OUTLOOK

Costa Mesa has won only three league games in three seasons, but Ferguson, at 23 the youngest head coach in the county, is a voice of optimism. “We believe we are a playoff-bound team,” he said. “A lot of coaches told me this is the worst place for a coach to be--a coach’s graveyard. But I look at it the other way, that this is the best place for me to be. I’ve got great kids with a great work ethic.” Because the Mustangs won’t be very tall, Ferguson is emphasizing pressure defense. Freeman is the best rebounder and is a good low-post defender. Carmon, a transfer from Tustin, is an “unbelievable defender,” Ferguson said. Ogo, the point guard, is also a strong defender. Ferguson believes Weeks, the team’s best all-around player, and Montoya could be among the county’s 10-best three-point shooters. More toughness will be added by Crenshaw, Chatman and Reeves, who played for the football team. Crenshaw, in particular, will challenge for a starting spot.
