SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Victories haven’t come easily for Loyola Marymount basketball Coach John Olive during his first two seasons--especially lopsided victories.

So Cal State Hayward, which competes on the NCAA Division II level, was put on the schedule to open the 1994-95 season.

And Loyola Marymount rolled to a 92-51 victory Saturday night before 942 at Gersten Pavilion.

Wyking Jones led the way with 24 points and four other Lions scored in double figures as Loyola Marymount recorded its most lopsided victory since 1991.

“Let’s face it: It’s nice to have an easy win, no matter who it’s against,” said Olive, whose teams won only 13 of 41 games in his first two seasons. “Our enthusiasm and intensity were really nice to see tonight.”

Said Jones, who made 10 of 15 shots: “Last year, we didn’t get any easy wins. We opened up with UCLA last year and that didn’t go well at all.”

Loyola Marymount opened last season with a 115-77 loss to the Bruins.

Against Hayward, the Lions started quickly, making 58% of their shots in the first half while holding the Pioneers (0-2) to 29% shooting and building a 50-22 halftime lead.

Jones scored 16 points in the first half and point guard Jim Williamson had 11 points and five assists.

“We played really good defense in the first half and we rebounded well,” said Williamson, a sophomore who matched a career high with nine assists.

“We moved the ball around well and we were taking good shots and not forcing anything.”

Loyola Marymount cruised in the second half, as most of the starters headed for the bench with about 10 minutes to play.

The Lions wound up making 51.5% of their shots and held Hayward to 32.8% shooting.

Olive is hoping his team can put together many quality performances this season.

“We’ve got to establish our identity as a team,” he said.

“We feel we’ve put a good team together over the past two to three years and now we’ve got to show it.”

Ime Oduok scored 13 points for the Lions. Cobi McElroy had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hayward was led by Lamont Kelly, who scored 21 points.
