COACH YR. AT SCHOOL Jeff Fortes 7th
TOP NEWCOMERS POS HT YR Gerald Timmons G 5-10 So. Isaac Thomas F 6-0 Jr. Matthew Alexander G 5-10 Jr. Anthony Freeman C 6-5 Sr. Demetrius Williams F 6-1 Sr. Bigler Heath F 6-2 Jr.
OUTLOOK
The Mustangs start fresh every season because Kilpatrick is an L.A. County facility for juvenile offenders and players rarely stay longer than one year. “This team has meshed together quicker than any other year. They are very responsive considering most of them haven’t played organized basketball,” Fortes said. Freeman could become a dominant inside player. The Mustangs are making their Alpha League debut.
L.A. Baptist
1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 15-8 5-3 2nd
COACH YR. AT SCHOOL Maury Neville 18th
TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR Kevin Aust C 6-2 Sr. Matt Bergeson C 6-6 Sr.
TOP NEWCOMERS POS HT YR Ara Zeney G 5-10 So. Russ Brumpton F/G 5-11 Jr. Edwin Lewis F/G 5-10 Jr. Armen Kaprelian C 6-2 Sr. Ron Neville C/F/G 6-2 Jr.
OUTLOOK
The Knights will spend the first part of the season trying to find an identity as only two players with significant playing time return from last season. “This is not abnormal to have so many new players,” Neville said. “The program feeds itself through the years.” Brumpton and Lewis are likely starters from the junior varsity. The Knights should be fighting for a playoff spot.
Village Christian
1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 17-9 7-1 1st
COACH YR. AT SCHOOL Brian Gibson 5th
TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR David Gustafson G 6-2 Sr. Chad Hanson G 6-3 Sr. Alberto Ramos G 5-11 Jr. Kirk Sorensen C 6-5 Sr. Chad Bussanich G 5-11 Sr.
TOP NEWCOMERS POS HT YR Aaron Kendrick F/G 5-11 Jr. Tim Gustafson F 6-2 So. Mike Mitchell F 6-3 Jr. Sergio Gonzales F 6-2 Sr. Mike Kendrick F 6-1 Sr. Jason Mikels G 5-9 Sr. Robert Mikels G 5-9 Sr. D.J. Burke G 5-9 Jr.
OUTLOOK
The Crusaders should repeat as league champions as all three starting guards return. Gustafson, the returning league MVP, and Hanson (15 ppg) are three-year starters and give Village Christian one of the best perimeter teams in the area. The inside game is still an area of concern as Sorenson lacks experience, but the Crusaders should have no trouble scoring. Gustafson (19.2 ppg) is the third-highest returning scorer among area teams and was All-Southern Section.
Kennedy Cosgrove, Jeff Fletcher, Dana Haddad, Vince Kowalick and Michael Lazarus contributed to these capsules.
