OUTLOOK

There’s good news and bad news for the Sailors, according to Smith. First, the bad news: “We’re not big, we’re not especially quick, and we play a very tough schedule,” Smith said. And the good news? “We’ve got intelligent players who realize this and know they’ll have to make up for it by playing smart and as a team, which I think they’ll do,” he said. Newport Harbor will face stiff competition in the Tournament of Champions and the San Diego Above the Rim tournament, and Smith hopes the killer schedule will have the Sailors ready for the rigors of the Sea View League. Torribio is the team’s top perimeter scoring threat, with Rankin providing the ability to drive to the hoop. Newport Harbor will rely on a team effort on the boards, led by Peikert and Badorek. “Our destiny will lie in our ability to play together and work together to make us better as a unit than we could be individually,” Smith said.
