SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Moorpark College wrestling team’s season ended on a disappointing note when John Jimenez and Tim Bonebright were defeated in semifinal matches of the state wrestling tournament at Rio Hondo College on Saturday afternoon.

Jimenez, who competes in the 134-pound class, and Bonebright (142 pounds) were the top finishers for Moorpark, which qualified 10 wrestlers for the tournament.

Jimenez (28-12) lost to Cerritos’ David Gayer, 3-2, in an aggressive match. Several times the referee warned the wrestlers that they could be disqualified jostling after the whistle.

The bout was delayed 10 minutes when Jimenez suffered a cut to the left side of his nose.

Jimenez lost to Shane Holloway of Rancho Santiago, 9-1, in the consolation round to place fourth.

Bonebright lost to Eddie Ramos of Fresno City College, 11-4, in the semifinals. Ramos was seeded No. 1 in the class and is the defending state champion.

“Tim went up against the top opponent in the state,” Moorpark Coach John Keever said. “I know that he did everything he could.”

Bonebright lost to Juan Alvarez from Cerritos College, 6-5, in the fifth-place match.

Moorpark’s Kyle Plummer (158) defeated Diablo Valley’s Josh Nagar, 4-0, in the fifth-place match.

Moorpark’s Jeremy Pratt (167) finished eighth after forfeiting his final match because of a shoulder injury.
