Andrea Gaston of Chatsworth will attempt to become the first golfer since 1978 to win consecutive Women’s State Amateur championships when she meets Juli Christopher in the 18-hole final round today at the Golf Club at Quail Lodge in Carmel.
Golfing great Patty Sheehan won the tournament in 1977 and 1978.
Gaston, a member of the Porter Valley Country Club, defeated Eva Monisteri, 5 and 4, Saturday to advance.
Christopher, the co-medalist, beat Diane Irvin, 4 and 3. Christopher was the runner-up in the 1992 Women’s Amateur.
Gaston and Christopher have never played against each other, but played together during a practice round last summer.
“She’s a longer-ball hitter,” Gaston said. “The forecast is for rain (today) and with the wet conditions, she may have the advantage.”
In the semifinal, Gaston took control early, going 3-up after seven holes then coasting to the victory in 14 holes.
