Mayor Richard Riordan and the mayor of Split, Croatia, signed an agreement Tuesday formalizing Los Angeles’ latest sister city relationship.
“Sister cities offer people throughout the world an opportunity to express their common desire for friendship, goodwill and cooperation,” Riordan said.
City Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr., a second-generation Croatian American, presided in the council chamber as Riordan and Split Mayor Nikola Grabic signed the accord.
As a gift, Los Angeles officials will ship a surplus fire engine to Split, a city on the Adriatic coast of the former Yugoslavia.
Los Angeles has developed cultural and economic ties with 17 other sister cities, including Athens, Berlin, Bombay, Mexico City, Taipei, Vancouver and St. Petersburg.
