COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Valley Holds On, Beats Golden West
Josh Porter scored with seven seconds left to give Irvine Valley the lead and the Lasers held on to beat Golden West, 86-85, in overtime Friday in a Riverside tournament consolation game.
Golden West had a chance to tie when Michael Dean was fouled while shooting with two seconds left. Dean made the first free throw but missed the second. Dean made a three-pointer to tie it, 82-82, with 1:30 left and added a basket with 31 seconds remaining to tie the score, 84-84.
Porter finished with 25 and Rashad Wilson added 17 for Irvine Valley (7-5). Dean had 31 and Dejun Matthews added 18 for Golden West (4-6), which was eliminated.
Irvine Valley plays Citrus at 1 p.m. today for the consolation championship.
In other Riverside tournament games:
Riverside 88, Cypress 75--Riverside (11-2) moved into the final with the victory. Gil Gonzales scored 25 for Cypress, which beat Riverside in the Barstow tournament championship game this season.
Riverside plays Imperial Valley tonight at 7 for the championship. Cypress plays Mt. San Jacinto at 5 p.m. in the third-place game.
Jeff Cummins had 15 and Matt Kenney added 13 for Cypress (9-3). Desmen Granger had 20 for Riverside.
Southwestern 78, Fullerton 76--Marcus Austin scored 32 points for Fullerton (7-6), which was eliminated.
In the Santa Barbara tournament:
Rancho Santiago 75, Hancock 64--Marlon Watson and Aaron Aguilera each scored 14 points for Rancho Santiago (7-2), which lost to Ventura, 101-70, in a late game Thursday. Jimmy Harris added 13 for Rancho Santiago.
In a nonconference game:
El Camino 84, Orange Coast 82--Damion Morbley had 36 for Orange Coast (5-3), which lost its third consecutive game.
In the Hancock women’s tournament:
Golden West 87, Merced 65--Farrah Magee had 27 points and 14 rebounds and Julie Murdent added 25 points to lead Golden West (10-3) in the first round.
In the Los Angeles Valley tournament:
Ventura 75, Cypress 44--Jody Caruso scored 16 points and Sara Works added 10 for Cypress (8-4). It is the second time Ventura has beaten the Chargers this season.
In a nonconference game:
Cerritos 48, Fullerton 43--Norah Mariner scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for host Fullerton (7-6), which shot 25% from the field.
