SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION VII : Arroyo Grande Wins Title on the Ground

Sophomore Jimmy Pratt scored two touchdowns and led a productive Arroyo Grande ground attack as the Eagles shut out Mira Costa, 16-0, to win the Southern Section Division VII football title Saturday night.

Pratt, who scored on runs of one and 29 yards, finished with 71 yards in 15 carries.

Arroyo Grande gained all of its 227 total yards on the ground. Andy Sowell had 52 yards in 10 carries, Eric Schandel had 49 yards in eight carries and Jarrett Garife added 36 yards in seven carries.

Mira Costa led in most offensive categories, producing 15 first downs to 10 for Arroyo Grande and compiling a 239-227 edge in total offense.

But Mustang sophomore quarterback Keith Cooper struggled, throwing two interceptions, one of which set up an Arroyo Grande touchdown.

Chris Thornberry returned an interception 26 yards to set up Pratt’s second touchdown early in the third quarter.

Arroyo Grande’s two other scoring drives each consumed nearly six minutes.

The Eagles drove 70 yards in 17 plays to set up Pratt’s one-yard run in the second quarter and marched 57 yards in 15 plays to set up a 20-yard field goal by Sal Rivas early in the fourth quarter.
