49ers Suspend O’Kelley for Game

Senior forward Terrance O’Kelley, whose academic performance has disappointed Long Beach State Coach Seth Greenberg, was suspended Monday for one game, the school announced.

O’Kelley, 6 feet 7 and 245 pounds, will miss the 49ers’ nonconference game Dec. 21 against Montana at The Pyramid. O’Kelley remains in good academic standing at Long Beach and is eligible according to Big West Conference and NCAA standards.

“Terrance didn’t tell us the truth (about his academic situation),” Greenberg said. “You don’t lie to people who care about you.”

O’Kelley did not start the season opener against Detroit Mercy for failure to turn in a class project. He is averaging 6.6 points and five rebounds for the 49ers (2-1).

As a junior, O’Kelley was selected third-team all-conference. He averaged 11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and a team-leading 2.2 blocks.
