Daylon McCutcheon, a running back and defensive back for Bishop Amat, received the Glenn Davis Award, presented annually by The Times to the top high school player in Southern California.

McCutcheon, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior who gained 2,447 yards and scored 33 touchdowns, received the award at The Times’ San Gabriel Valley awards brunch Sunday at the Pasadena Holiday Inn. The Times’ brunch honored the area’s top 23 players from more than 50 area schools.

McCutcheon also was named San Gabriel Valley back of the year and teammate Kory Minor was selected lineman of the year.

Alhambra’s Gil Ruedaflores, who guided the Moors to a 9-2 record and a berth in the Southern Section playoffs for only the fourth time since 1978, was selected coach of the year.

Christian Okoye, a former running back at Azusa Pacific and an All-Pro with the Kansas City Chiefs, was the guest speaker.

* Bishop Amat’s hopes for an unbeaten season and mythical national championship came to an end Saturday when the top-ranked Lancers lost to Mater Dei, 28-21, before 26,295 in the Southern Section Division I final at Anaheim Stadium.

Bishop Amat committed a season-high four turnovers.

* Muir retired the numbers of three former basketball players this week during its tournament.

The players honored included Kansas guard Jacque Vaughn, who wore No. 11 at Muir in 1993, Atlanta Hawks forward Stacey Augmon who wore No. 32 in 1986 and former Houston Rocket Eric McWilliams, who wore No. 33 in 1968.

* John Salter, a catcher at Damien High, has signed a national letter of intent to continue his career at Stanford.

Salter batted .542 with six home runs and 35 runs batted in last season.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Pasadena City College will play host to the Crown City Classic men’s basketball tournament today through Saturday.

The tournament field includes Rancho Santiago, Fullerton, Rio Hondo, East Los Angeles, Cuesta, Valley and Los Angeles City colleges.

Today’s schedule: Rio Hondo vs. L.A. City, 2 p.m.; Valley vs. Fullerton, 4 p.m.; Rancho Santiago vs. Cuesta, 6 p.m.; East L.A. vs. Pasadena, 8 p.m.

* Jimmy Irby, a sophomore defensive end for Mt. San Antonio College, was named second-team All-American by the J.C. Grid Wire.

Mt. SAC quarterback Cody Lee Smith and Citrus defensive back Shamori Walker were honorable mention selections.

Brent Malili, who played fullback this past season for Mt. SAC, was named to the J.C. Grid Wire Scholar/Athlete All-American team. Malili, a sophomore who graduated from Paramount High, had a 3.3 grade-point average.

Mt. SAC running back Larry Brown, who had a 3.2 GPA, was honorable mention.

* The Mt. SAC women’s basketball team defeated Citrus, 80-64, to win the consolation championship of the Valley tournament.

Pasadena finished fourth in the Santa Monica tournament, losing the third-place game to Santa Monica, 68-46

COLLEGES

Vic Shealy, the defensive coordinator at Austin Peay State University, has been named football coach at Azusa Pacific.

Shealy, 33, succeeds Jim Milhon, who retired as the Cougars’ coach after 17 seasons.

Shealy, who played at Richmond University, has coached at Richmond, Baylor and at National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics member Mars Hill College (N.C.) and at Austin Peay.

Shealy inherits a program that returns 16 starters from a team that finished 3-6 last season.

* The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team is off to its best start in school history after road victories over Menlo College and UC Davis.

The Broncos, who do not play this week, are 7-1. Pomona started 6-2 in the 1963-64 season when it finished 23-6 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.

Junior forward Tyrone Merriweather is averaging 18 points and nine rebounds for Pomona, whose only loss is to San Diego State. Senior forward Mike Reynolds is averaging 12 points.

Pomona resumes play Monday night with a home game against Azusa Pacific.

* Freshman forward Jessica Eggleston is averaging 17 points a game for the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team, which entered the week 5-2.

Sophomore Lori Talley is averaging a team-high six rebounds for Pomona, which plays at Chico State tonight and will play host to Southern Oregon Friday night.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Mike Contreras, Alhambra--Contreras scored 21 points for the Moors in their 56-47 victory over Arroyo in the championship game of the Arroyo tournament.

Contreras had led the Moors to a 6-0 record entering the week.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Jarod Mix, Citrus--Mix, a 6-3 freshman from Monrovia, scored 33, 22, 27 and 28 points in games during the Riverside tournament.

The Owls lost to Irvine Valley, 73-68, in the consolation championship game.

MISCELLANY

The Foothill-Citrus Baseball Umpires Assn. will have its first meeting Jan. 22 at Walnut High. The organization is seeking members, who earn $46 for working one-man, non-varsity games. The association will provide training in rules. Information: (818) 964-9445.

CALENDAR

Baseball camps for players ages 6 to 16 are scheduled to begin Wednesday and end Dec. 23 and Dec. 27-29 at Temple City High.

The camps, run by former South Pasadena High and Mt. SAC standout Rob Nelson and Temple City Coach Denny Marquardt feature instruction and lectures by current and former professional players. The cost is $75 a session.
