COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Duke Easily Keeps Non-Conference Streak Alive

Another night in Cameron Indoor Stadium, one more victim for No. 9 Duke.

Cherokee Parks scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures as the Blue Devils ran their non-conference homecourt winning streak to 93 games with a 99-56 victory over North Carolina A&T; Monday night in Durham, N.C.

In addition, the Blue Devils have won 81 of their last 86 games in Cameron Indoor Stadium, and they raised their non-conference record over the last 10 years to 175-18 in playing their first game after the break for final exams.

“We were focused for the ballgame, and after exams and before the break, I think that says a lot for the kids on our team,” Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Duke (6-1) made 68.5 percent of its field goals, but also committed 24 turnovers. A&T; finished 18 for 68 (26.5 percent).

No. 14 Syracuse 103, Robert Morris 67--Otis Hill and Lazarus Sims led a 20-4 run late in the first half as the Orangemen (6-1) defeated the Colonials (2-3) in Syracuse, N.Y., for their sixth victory in a row.

John Wallace had 16 points and was one of six players in double figures for Syracuse, which surpassed 100 points for the first time this season.

Syracuse went to a full-court trap less than a minute into the game and forced Robert Morris into 16 turnovers while holding the smaller Colonials to 31 percent shooting (seven for 22) en route to a 48-30 halftime lead.

No. 18 Georgia Tech 94, Furman 73--Drew Barry scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the No. 18 Yellow Jackets (7-1) pulled away early in the second half against Furman (2-5) in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech, coming off its first loss Saturday night against Louisville, saw its 43-39 halftime lead cut to one point when Furman’s Chuck Vincent made a three-point play to open the second half.

The Yellow Jackets then scored 10 consecutive points, with Barry and Travis Best making three-point shots, to go ahead for good.

Jeff Sexton led Mercer with 18 points.

No. 22 Virginia 100, VMI 73--Harold Deane scored 21 points to lead five players in double figures and the No. 22 Cavaliers (6-2) overwhelmed the Keydets (2-5) in Charlottesville, Va.

Cory Alexander contributed 17 points, Junior Burrough 16, Yuri Barnes 14 and Curtis Staples 12 for the Cavaliers.

No. 23 Illinois 90, Mercer 66--Bryant Notree scored 15 points to lead five Illinois players in double figures as the Fighting Illini (8-1) defeated the Bears (3-4) in Champaign, Ill., as Coach Lou Henson substituted freely.

OTHER GAMES Dion Cross led a balanced scoring attack with 25 points as Stanford (6-0) overpowered American University (0-8) with a 22-9 first-half run en route to an 97-71 victory in Washington. Brevin Knight added 17 points and David Harbour and Tim Young 14 points each for Stanford. . . . Erwin Claggett made five of eight three-point shots and scored 24 points in 23 minutes as Saint Louis (7-0) rolled to a 93-69 victory over Southern Methodist (1-5) in St. Louis. . . . Unbeaten Oklahoma rolled to its seventh consecutive victory, getting 28 points from Ryan Minor to win, 91-67, over Mount Saint Mary’s, Md., (2-3) in Norman, Okla.
