BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

In nonleague games:

Estancia 52, Orange 45--When you hold your opponent without a field goal for more than eight minutes you figure to be in total control of the game. But Estancia needed that defensive stand and more to defeat host Orange.

Showing no effects from their loss to Santa Ana Valley in the Irvine tournament final last Saturday, the Eagles (10-2) outscored Orange, 14-2, in the second quarter after shifting from a man-to-man to zone defense. The only Panther points came on two free throws by Andy Lauridsen.

That was the only time Orange (6-2) came up dry in its home opener, missing all eight attempts from the field. And despite an 11-2 run to start the third quarter that drew them to within, 34-32, the Panthers never seriously threatened.

Orange did manage to cause Estancia Coach Tim Parsel some anxious moments.

“When we came out for the third quarter we wanted to control the first four minutes,” Parsel said. “Instead we miss several two-footers, they make four shots in a row and are right back in the game.

“We knew they would never give up. We probably should have won by 12, but this is such a tough place to play.”

Orange Coach Mark Holman said there were no incendiary speeches or caterwauling in the Panthers’ halftime locker room to shake his team out of its stupor. But despite only 12 turnovers against the Estancia press and being outrebounded by the taller Eagles only 26-23, there were enough things that went wrong to give Holman material for practice.

“We don’t shoot good enough to make the mistakes we made tonight and beat a good team like Estancia,” Holman said.
