Santa Margarita, Junior
Basketball/Center
Last season, his first on the varsity, Krist started an occasional game for the Eagles. This year, after hitting the weight room hard in the off-season, Krist is helping lead the team. Last week, he averaged 16.7 points and 10 rebounds as Santa Margarita won the Encinitas San Dieguito tournament for the second consecutive season. Krist, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 15 points and 14 rebounds in a 43-35 victory over Torrey Pines in the title game. In a 62-56 victory over San Diego St. Augustine in a semifinal, Krist, 6 feet 8, had 14 points and 10 rebounds and played tough defense on Jelani McCoy, a 6-10 center who has signed with UCLA. McCoy scored 23 points but had only six rebounds. “(Krist) has really improved offensively and defensively,” Santa Margarita Coach Jerry DeBusk said. “He now has the physicalness it takes to get it done.”
