Art Green, the girls’ track and field coach at Thousand Oaks High since 1978, has stepped down due to time constraints and a general feeling of burnout.

Green, 41, guided Thousand Oaks to 14 Marmonte League titles in 17 seasons.

The Lancers won the Southern Section 3-A Division championship in 1992 after finishing second to Rio Mesa in 1991. They were runners-up in the section’s 4-A Division finals in 1978, ’80 and ‘87, and finished third in the 1993 State meet.

Green, who began a job as an adaptive physical education specialist in the Conejo Unified School District in September, originally intended to take only a year off from coaching, but his absence could be longer.

“Just about every year, I was burned out at the end of the season,” Green said. “It’s just the way I coach. I think I needed a break and this whole job opportunity provided me a chance to do that.

“Just the idea of not being tied down to a coaching position right now is very appealing to me.”
