From Staff and Wire Reports

Fullback Tom Rathman and tailback Ty Montgomery, members of the Raiders’ starting backfield for the first six games of the season, were among six players made available Thursday for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ and Carolina Panthers’ expansion draft.

Although Montgomery was replaced in the starting lineup by Harvey Williams and eventually dropped to the inactive list, Rathman started the entire season.

Others named by the Raiders were offensive linemen Max Montoya and Rich Stephens, defensive lineman/tight end John Duff and defensive back Cary Brabham.

Montoya announced his retirement to the media after the regular-season finale, but he has not made it official.

Raider quarterback Jeff Hostetler has been selected to replace Miami’s Dan Marino on the AFC squad for next month’s Pro Bowl game. Marino is still bothered by the Achilles’ tendon injury he suffered in 1993.

The expansion list includes a Super Bowl MVP, a Heisman Trophy winner, a six-time Pro Bowl selection and more than 600 pounds of Perry brothers.

Mark Rypien, Desmond Howard, Chris Doleman, and William and Michael Dean Perry are among the players available.

Each of the 28 established teams must make six players available in the draft. All those teams submitted their lists except Super Bowl opponents San Francisco and San Diego, which don’t have to send in their names until Jan. 31.

Rypien, who led the Washington Redskins to the 1992 Super Bowl championship, was Vinny Testaverde’s backup at Cleveland last season.

Howard won the 1991 Heisman Trophy at Michigan, but the wide receiver has been a disappointment in three seasons with the Redskins.

Doleman was 1992 NFC defensive player of the year with Minnesota, which traded him to Atlanta last season. But his $2.7-million salary may scare off the Panthers and Jaguars.

Fourteen former Pro Bowl players and 12 first-round draft picks were on the expansion list.

The other Pro Bowl selections were Montoya, Rypien, Doleman, Arizona’s Gary Clark, Karl Mecklenburg of Denver, Rodney Holman of Detroit, Chris Miller of the Rams, Johnny Johnson of the Jets, Ferrell Edmunds of Seattle, Pierce Holt of Atlanta, Mark Carrier of Cleveland, and Ethan Horton and Leonard Marshall of Washington.
