COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Henry Goes Up, Lifts Valley Over Glendale, 67-65

Valley College’s Kenyth Henry scored the winning basket on an alley-oop dunk with four seconds to give the Monarchs a 67-65 victory over Glendale in a Western State Conference game Saturday night at Glendale.

Sophomore forward Charlie Garcia and freshman guard Eric Scott each had 14 points for the Vaqueros (10-11, 0-2).

West L.A. 81, Canyons 77--Roderick Tennell had 27 points as West L.A. (1-1 in conference play) beat the Cougars (7-14, 0-2) in a WSC game. Sophomore guard Steve Tampus had 24 points for Canyons.

Santa Barbara 81, Oxnard 74--Anthony Talley and Brandon Lee each scored 23 points but it wasn’t enough for the Condors (13-10, 0-2) in a WSC North Division game.

Adam Sjovold scored 16 points for Santa Barbara (11-12, 2-0).

Antelope Valley 112, Barstow 90--Sophomore Orville Turner poured in 35 points and freshman Corey Bolton added 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Marauders (16-7, 1-0) past the Vikings (7-17, 0-2) in a Foothill Conference game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern Utah 74, Cal State Northridge 50--The Matadors’ frustration continued as they made only five shots in the first half of their American West Conference opener at Northridge.

Cal State Northridge (0-16, 0-1) was led by Carrie Dormire’s 13 points.

Cherri Frandsen had 21 points for Southern Utah (10-9, 2-0).

Fresno Pacific 84, The Master’s 36--The Mustangs made only 25% of their shots in the NAIA game at Master’s (3-17).

Kimberly DeVries had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs.

Janee Young scored 15 points for Fresno Pacific, which led, 44-14, at halftime.

Canyons 112, Pierce 89--Kyetra Brown had 34 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds for the Cougars (20-5, 2-0) in a Western State Conference game at Pierce.

Kerri Garland added 13 points and 13 rebounds, while reserve Melissa Dunkerley had 16 of her 20 points in the first half.

Julie Kawamoto had 17 points for Pierce (9-12, 0-2).

Valley 77, Glendale 57--Vonya Dangerfield had 15 points and 16 rebounds and Erika Upton added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Valley (17-7, 2-0) in a Western State Conference South Division victory at Glendale.

It was the Monarchs’ fifth consecutive victory since losing to Ventura.

Carrie Peterson had 18 points for Glendale.

Ventura 92, Moorpark 61--Julie Hardy had 33 points for the Pirates (18-1, 2-0) in a WSC North Division victory at Moorpark.

Amber Magner added 19 points for the Pirates, who are ranked second in the state, while Marina Reyes contributed 16 points and nine assists.

Khrysla Scanlon and Janette Oriza each scored 22 for Moorpark.

TRACK AND FIELD

Cal State Northridge received strong performances from James Lincoln, Tyrone Gales and its women distance runners in the Silver States Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Reno Livestock and Events Center.

Lincoln took second in the high jump at 6 feet 8 inches and was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 22-4 1/4, while Gales uncorked a toss of 60-4 in the 35-pound weight throw--slightly more than two feet off of his school record.

Laurie Miller won the women’s mile in 5:20.53, with Cheri Segal fourth (5:28.92).

Teresa Stricklin (45-5 1/2) finished second and Beth Burton (44-8) was third in the women’s shotput behind double-winner Gea Johnson, competing unattached, who had a 47-6 1/2 effort.

Marshall Evans was fourth in the 55 meters in 6.52, while former Taft High standout Andre DeSaussure finished sixth at 6.63 in his debut for Washington.

DeSaussure ran 6.53 in a heat race, and was clocked in 22.09 in the 200 meters, good enough to win a heat and give him fourth place overall.
