Shomario Richard of Nogales and Rico Harris of Temple City are ranked eighth and 11th, respectively, among state scoring leaders, according to midseason statistics compiled by the California Interscholastic Federation.

Richard, a guard, is averaging 27.4 points a game. He is third in assists at 9.7.

Harris, a forward, is averaging 25.7 points and is second in rebounding at 14.1.

Curiously absent from the list, however, was Wilson’s Willie Allen, who is averaging more than 25 points.

* Several San Gabriel Valley area high school football players are expected to sign national letters of intent with universities and colleges Wednesday, the first day of a weeklong signing period.

Kory Minor, The Times’ San Gabriel Valley lineman of the year, is expected to sign with Notre Dame. He would become the first Lancer to join the Fighting Irish since 1983 graduate Pernell Taylor.

Daylon McCutcheon of Bishop Amat, the recipient of The Times’ Glenn Davis Award as the outstanding prep player in Southern California, has not decided on a school.

Pasadena linebacker Lester Towns is expected to sign with Washington.

* The Damien boys’ soccer team is ranked No. 1 and Claremont is sixth in the Southern Section Division I poll.

Diamond Bar is ranked fifth in Division II, Temple City is seventh and El Monte 10th in Division IV. Bosco Tech and Maranatha are ranked first and second, respectively, in Division V.

The Claremont girls’ team is ranked fourth in Division I and Arcadia is second in Division II.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Mt. San Antonio College men’s basketball team entered the week at 10-11, but the Mounties are in the thick of the race for the South Coast Conference championship after defeating El Camino, 89-76.

Jason Calhoun scored 20 points and Eddie Powell added 18 for the Mounties, who improved to 2-1 in conference play.

Pasadena City College entered the week 8-13 and 0-3 in the South Coast Conference after losing to Cerritos, 91-72.

Donald Guyton, a former standout at Pasadena High, scored 19 points and had 10 assists for PCC.

* Saladin McCullough, a former standout running back at Muir High who signed a national letter of intent with USC two years ago, has left Pasadena City College and will enroll at El Camino College.

Linebacker Treyvone Towns, a former standout at Pasadena High, also has left PCC for El Camino.

COLLEGES

Major league baseball players might be on strike, but Cal Poly Pomona will begin its baseball season Saturday when the Broncos play on the road against The Master’s College. Pomona plays at Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday.

The Broncos, who play their home opener on Wednesday against Southern California College, will be led by junior second baseman Jason Wakefield, who batted .342 last season.

Senior right-hander Larry Lusk, who was 2-4 with a 5.50 earned-run average last season, is expected to start against The Master’s.

* The La Verne University men’s basketball team is ranked third in the West Region among NCAA Division II schools.

La Verne is ranked behind No. 1 Wisconsin-Platteville and St. Thomas (Minn.). The Leopards stayed in the hunt for the championship of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by defeating Cal Lutheran, 83-68, last weekend.

Leonard Aguilar scored 18 points and Raphael Glover added 17 for the Leopards, who improved to 11-4 and 3-1 in the SCIAC.

Cal Lutheran came into the contest 3-0 in SCIAC play.

* The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team, ranked 10th in NCAA Division III, will engage in an early season showdown Friday night against No. 7 Cal Lutheran.

Amy Cleveland is averaging 18.4 points a game for Claremont (14-2 and 3-0 in SCIAC). Cal Lutheran (15-0, 3-0) has a 17-game winning streak dating to last season.

* The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team entered the week 15-6 and 4-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference and ranked 24th in National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I.

Forward Raymond Tutt is ranked eighth nationally in scoring, averaging 26.8 points a game for the Cougars, who play host to Biola on Saturday night.

Deric Daniels is averaging 17 points a game for Azusa Pacific, which is 27-1 in GSAC play since 1993. The Cougars only loss came last year when they were defeated, 68-67, by Westmont.

* Gary Knecht, who has coached at the high school, community college and college levels, has been named defensive coordinator for the Azusa Pacific football team.

Knecht, 54, most recently was an assistant defensive coordinator at Fresno City College.

* The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team will play host to Cal State Los Angeles tonight and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday.

Pomona, which entered the week 13-4 and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., is ranked 18th in NCAA Division II.

Tyrone Merriweather is averaging 15 points and eight rebounds for the Broncos. Barnabas James, who had a career-high 19 points and 16 rebounds in an 84-66 loss to Grand Canyon Saturday, is averaging 10 points a game.

Tom Marshall, in his first season as coach of the Broncos, needs only two victories to reach the 200 mark for his career. Marshall was 185-105 in 11 seasons at UC San Diego.

* The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team appears to be a longshot to win its 14th consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship.

The Broncos entered the week 7-11 and 0-3 in conference after losing to Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills last week.

Pomona has only nine players after losing freshman guard Cathy Bass, who is out for the season because of a fractured right hip.

Jessica Eggleston is averaging 15 points and seven rebounds for the Broncos, who play first-place UC Riverside Saturday night.

* A 2-K and 5-K run and a 5-K walk that will benefit the Azusa Pacific track program and the Azusa Unified School District’s physical education/athletic program will be staged Feb. 4.

Top finishers will receive plaques. Cost: $15 for adults, $10 for children.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Myesha Saleem, Monrovia--Saleem, a sophomore, scored 18 points and had 18 rebounds and seven blocked shots in the Wildcats’ 43-34 Rio Hondo League victory over Temple City in girls’ basketball.

Saleem helped Monrovia improve to 6-8 and 2-3 in league.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Leonard Aguilar, La Verne--Aguilar, a former standout at El Monte High, scored 18 points as the Leopards handed Cal Lutheran its first loss in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, 83-68.

La Verne (11-4) entered the week ranked third in NCAA Division III in the West Region.

MISCELLANY
