BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Ana Valley Wins in Overtime

Michael Riggins hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to send the game into overtime, and Santa Ana Valley went on to defeat El Modena, 74-72, in a Century League game Friday at El Modena.

Olujimi Mann scored 22 points, including 17 in the second half and overtime, for Santa Ana Valley (14-7, 5-1). Mann made three three-pointers, as did Michael Saunders, who scored 12 points.

Ryan Villmer led El Modena (12-7, 3-3) with 33 points, despite playing the second half and overtime with four fouls. He scored six of El Modena’s eight points in overtime, and helped hold Ike Harmon, the Falcons’ second-leading scorer, to five points, 11 below his average. Chris Goodwin added 14 points for El Modena.

In other Century League games:

Canyon 60, Villa Park 32--Tim Tynan scored 17 points for the Comanches (9-13, 3-3). Adam Hoover added 12 and Ryan Walker had 10 rebounds. Eric Chenowith scored 10 points for Villa Park (10-9, 1-5).

Foothill 72, Orange 69 (OT)--Dan Almquist’s jumper with two seconds remaining sent the game into overtime for host Foothill. Almquist then scored six points in the extra session as the Knights (12-10, 3-3) took control. He finished with 26 points. Andy Lauridsen scored a game-high 28 points, including six three-pointers, for Orange (13-6, 3-3).

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 83, Riverside Sherman Indian 70--Josh Cameron scored 29, Ryan Mendenhall 21 and Bret Lautt had 15 points and 13 rebounds for Southern California Christian (10-7, 4-2).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 54, Century 44--Dan Simonsen scored 18, including 10 of 10 from the free-throw line, for El Dorado (16-6, 4-2), which outscored Century, 19-8, in the second quarter.

Katella 59, Loara 28--LaByron Clayton and Mike Paul each had 13 points for Katella (17-3, 4-2).

In the Express League:

Rolling Hills 66, Claremont 48--Steve Kimble scored 16 points for host Claremont (11-6, 4-6).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 56, Buena Park 43--Sam Mankiewicz scored 19 points for visiting Fullerton (14-7, 5-1). Towan Oliver led Buena Park (9-12, 1-5) with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Sonora 59, La Habra 50--Josh Lien scored 17 points as Sonora (19-2, 6-0) posted its 17th consecutive victory. The Raiders face Tustin, the last team to defeat them, next Saturday.

Troy 55, Sunny Hills 46--Jeff Sand scored 14 points for the Warriors (13-9, 4-2). Kris Green added 10 points and 12 rebounds and James Hampton had 10. Ben Nicolas scored 15 points for the Lancers (7-15, 0-6).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 87, Ontario Christian 56--Calvary Chapel (17-5, 5-1) made eight three-pointers, including three by Joe Ortiz, and took over first place.

Cerritos Valley Christian 61, Whittier Christian 54--Whittier Christian was outscored, 13-0, and fell into second place with the loss. Brad Smith scored 22 points, including six three-pointers, for Whittier Christian (10-10, 4-2).

Orange Lutheran 67, Brethren Christian 55--Kyle Salyer had 18 points for Orange Lutheran (7-12, 3-3). Scott Milne had 17 points to lead Brethren Christian (7-11, 1-4).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 49, Costa Mesa 41--Brandon Bloch scored 13 points for visiting Laguna Beach (12-9, 5-1). Mike Freeman led Costa Mesa (6-16, 1-5) with 19 points.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 92, Dana Hills 42--Shaun Jackson scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Clay McKnight scored 17 for the top-ranked Monarchs (25-1, 7-0).

Mission Viejo 70, San Clemente 62--Tyler Kalklosch scored 24 points for Mission Viejo (13-8, 4-3). Mike Casteneda and Eli Engle each had 12 for San Clemente.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 48, Edison 34--The Chargers (11-11, 1-5) took a 12-1 lead, but Esperanza (13-10, 5-2) came back for the victory. Lonnie Tape had 15 points and eight rebounds and Billy Omer had 14 for the Aztecs.

Fountain Valley 44, Huntington Beach 39--The ninth-ranked Barons outscored Huntington Beach, 17-6, in the fourth quarter after trailing by six after three quarters. Phil Domingo scored 14 and Paul Tayyar 13 for Fountain Valley (14-6, 5-1).
