Daylon McCutcheon of Bishop Amat, who received The Times’ Glenn Davis Award as the outstanding high school football player in Southern California, ended days of speculation Saturday when he announced that he will attend USC.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound McCutcheon played running back and defensive back last season. He gained 2,456 yards and scored 33 touchdowns as a senior and helped lead the Lancers to the Southern Section Division I championship game.

USC Coach John Robinson has said that McCutcheon will be used primarily as a defensive back and kick returner.

* El Monte High will be the site of the individual Division I wrestling championships Feb. 17-18.

A.B. Miller will play host to the Division II finals, Downey will be host to the Division III meet and Santiago will be site of the Division IV finals.

The Southern Section Masters Meet is scheduled for Feb. 25 and the state championships will be staged March 3-4 at the University of the Pacific.

* The Claremont boys’ soccer team readied itself for a run at a Southern Section championship with a 3-0 victory over Damien. The victory clinched the Baseline League title for the Wolfpack.

COLLEGES

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s basketball team entered the week in first place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after defeating La Verne, 84-81.

Sophomore forward Travis Greer scored 16 points for Pomona-Pitzer (13-6, 7-1 in the SCIAC). La Verne is 14-5 and 6-2.

Fitzgerald Moore of La Verne is the leading scorer in the SCIAC, averaging 19.9 points a game. Kevin Zitar of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is second at 18.2 points a game. Ben Turk of Caltech is the leading rebounder, averaging 11.4 a game.

* The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team, ranked 23rd in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics, will attempt to remain in contention for its third consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference title when the Cougars travel to Southern California College on Saturday.

Azusa Pacific entered the week 18-7 and tied for first place in the GSAC with Westmont at 7-1.

Raymond Tutt is averaging 27 points, Deric Daniels 7.6, Eric Wattree 12.5 and Tim Sebek 11 for the Cougars.

* Cal Poly Pomona Coach Tom Marshall is one win away from 200 career victories.

The Broncos (14-7, 2-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.) gave Marshall victory 199 Thursday by defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills, 55-53, on a last-second shot by freshman guard Adam Towle.

Tyrone Merriweather is averaging 15 points and 7.7 rebounds for Pomona, which plays host to Grand Canyon on Friday night.

* Leslee Rogers of La Verne is the top women’s scorer in the SCIAC, averaging 24.9 points a game for the Leopards, who are in third place behind Cal Lutheran and Claremont in the SCIAC.

Amy Cleveland of Claremont is second in scoring, averaging 19.1 points a game.

* The Azusa Pacific women’s basketball team entered the week 8-14 and 4-3 in the Golden State Athletic Conference after upsetting conference leader Fresno Pacific, 66-64.

Junior Christy Heyer scored 14 points for Azusa Pacific, which extended its winning streak to four games. Heyer made what proved to be the game-winning shot with seven seconds left. She is averaging 11.7 points and 9.9 rebounds.

Forward Christy Brock is the Cougars’ leading scorer at 18.4 points a game.

* The Azusa Pacific baseball team travels to Cal Poly Pomona Saturday for a doubleheader with the Broncos.

Azusa Pacific entered the week 3-0 after victories over Pomona-Pitzer, Cal State San Bernardino and Chapman. Brian Hagerty, Ruben Niebla and Paul Coppes earned the victories.

Cal Poly Pomona entered the week 4-2 after defeating Southern California College once and Cal State Stanislaus twice last week.

Dwayne Hall homered against Southern California College and had a ninth-inning game-winning single in the first game against Stanislaus.

* Four Azusa Pacific athletes qualified for the NAIA outdoor track and field championships in the marathon with their performances last weekend in a half-marathon in Las Vegas.

Sophomore John Gachao finished 24th in a field of about 6,000 runners, in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 5 seconds. Senior Jef Burns finished in 1:08.23, junior Steve Pye in 1:11.21 and junior Sarah Laufer in 1:26.09.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Colby Jackson, Claremont--Jackson, a forward, had a goal and an assist to help Claremont defeat Damien, 3-0, and clinch the Baseline League soccer championship.

Jackson, who was also a standout receiver for the Claremont football team, helped the Wolfpack improve to 16-6-3 and 8-1 in league play.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Travis Greer, Pomona-Pitzer--Greer, a sophomore forward, led the Sagehens to key victories over Cal Lutheran and La Verne to propel Pomona-Pitzer into first place in the SCIAC.

Greer scored 19 points and had eight rebounds in a 60-57 victory over Cal Lutheran. He scored 16 points and had seven rebounds in an 84-81 victory over La Verne.

MISCELLANY

Westridge School in Pasadena is staging its annual Summer Opportunities Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. The event will feature representatives from more than 60 camps, including those related to sports, youth activities, volunteerism and domestic and international travel. The city of El Monte is playing host to its annual Valentine’s Day Classic men’s D slow-pitch softball tournament on Feb. 18 at Mountain View High and Pioneer Park.

El Monte is also accepting registration for men’s and co-ed softball leagues and men’s basketball leagues.
