HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Grant’s Prayers Answered in 58-55 Victory

Ronald Patterson hit a 50-foot shot at the buzzer to give Grant High a 58-55 victory over Locke in a City 4-A first-round playoff game Friday night at Grant.

Grant (17-7) also hit a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter when Donald Patterson threw in a desperation shot as time expired.

Locke missed two shots in the closing seconds. Taj Rollins grabbed the rebound of the second miss and threw an outlet pass to Ronald Patterson, who hit his game-winning shot from midcourt.

Ronald Patterson, who scored 23 of his 30 points in the second half, made 10 of 15 shots. His brother Donald added 14.

Crenshaw 71, North Hollywood 65--The Huskies’ upset bid fell short when Shannon Johnson missed a layup that would have tied the score, 67-67, in the first-round game at Crenshaw.

Crenshaw’s Ronny Arch hit a jump shot with 1:45 left to give the Cougars a 67-65 lead and they added four free throws down the stretch.

Arthur Lee had 31 points and eight assists for North Hollywood (14-10). Teammates Terry Smith-Harris (eight points) and Nick Batzkovich (seven) each had 16 rebounds.

Robert Parker scored 14 points for Cresnhaw (21-5), the two-time defending State Division I champion.

3-A DIVISION

Birmingham 55, Marshall 42--Marshall made a late run at the Bears (14-9), but Scott Le Winter hit six of seven free throws down the stretch at Birmingham. Le Winter had 14 points.

Eagle Rock 74, El Camino Real 55--Jermel Jones scored 21 points, but was held scoreless in the final quarter for the Conquistadores at Eagle Rock.

Marvin Jones added 13 points for El Camino Real (9-13).

Ronnie Chambers had 16 points for Eagle Rock (20-5), which has won four games in a row.

Poly 62, Huntington Park 54--Jaime Cerna had 14 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots, Jonny Lopez had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Polo Gonzalez added 15 points and six assists for the Parrots (13-9) at Poly.

SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION I-A

Westlake 67, Redlands 64--Steve Aylsworth hit two free throws with 12 seconds left for the Warriors (19-4), then the Terriers missed two three-point shots in the final seconds.

Aylsworth finished with 26 points and eight assists, while Chris Harvey scored 24 points for Redlands (20-8)

Highland 77, Downey 58--John Burrell had 26 points, five rebounds and five steals, and Jamal DeDeaux added 24 points and five steals for the Bulldogs in the second-round game at Warren High in Downey.

The victory was the seventh in a row for Highland (20-6), which will face top-seeded Mater Dei in the quarterfinals.

Carl Biel added eight points and six assists for the Bulldogs, who hit 27 of 52 shots.

DIVISION II-AA

Mission Viejo 77, Crescenta Valley 74--Donald Williams scored the final four points for the Diablos (16-10) in overtime as they upset the fourth-seeded Falcons (25-2) at Mission Viejo.

Brock Jacobsen had 26 points and Blake Jacobson added 18 points for the Falcons.

Santa Barbara 59, Burbank 40--The Bulldogs (17-9) lost their leading scorer and rebounder midway through the second quarter and fell to the Dons (20-7).

Burbank’s Matt Baker, who averages 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, left the game with an injured right wrist and was taken to the hospital for X-rays.

DIVISION III-A

Santa Paula 85, Pacifica 63--Ben Tryk scored seven of his 26 points as the Cardinals (23-2) beat the defending Section champions. Teva Johnson added 21 points and Chris Cannon 16 for Santa Paula.

DIVISION IV-AA

Crespi 59, Laguna Beach 47--Gianandrea Marcaccini had 19 points, Marc Lubaszka added 16 and Conor O’Neal had 14 for the Celts (13-13) at Laguna Beach.

DIVISION IV-A

Santa Clara 64, Paraclete 37--Kevin Collins scored 17 points for the Saints (18-7) in Santa Clara.

Pius X 55, Village Christian 54--Emmitt Smith scored the winning basket on a 19-foot jump shot with 10 seconds remaining.

DIVISION V-A

Rio Hondo Prep 82, Antelope Valley Christian 73--Dave Diaz scored 31 points for the Kares (12-10) at Rio Hondo.

First Lutheran 70, Cornerstone Christian 50--Byron Brooks had 22 points and seven assists for First Lutheran (19-5), while James Griffin added 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Eric Olson scored 23 for Cornerstone Christian (18-7).

DIVISION V-AA

Campbell Hall 82, Hesperia Christian 67--Mike Appel scored 26 points for Campbell Hall (12-14), and Demetrius Ingram added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Montclair Prep 116, Demirjian 48--Reed Berglund had 22 points, nine assists and five steals, and Anwan Jones added 18 points, nine rebounds and five steals as the Mounties (21-4) set a school scoring record.
