DIVISION III SOCCER SEMIFINALS : Jacobs Makes Sure Woodbridge’s Hot Streak Continues

Mike Jacobs scored his fifth goal in four playoff games and assisted on the other as unseeded Woodbridge defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 2-0, in a Division III boys’ soccer semifinal Tuesday at Woodbridge.

The Warriors (20-5-2) have not lost in the last 19 games and will meet top-seeded Rancho Cucamonga Alta Loma in the championship game at noon Saturday at Cerritos Gahr.

In the last two games, Jacobs has scored three goals, assisted on one and was pulled down from behind to set up the Warriors’ other goal on a penalty kick.

Rancho Cucamonga (15-8-4) got a quick dose of Jacobs’ abilities when he scored 14 minutes into the game. Kevin Reid’s free kick from just inside the midfield stripe found Jeff Jensen to the right of the goal. Jensen then fed a backdoor pass to Jacobs, who sidestepped a defender and beat goalkeeper Chris Humphreys.

It was the first goal given up by Humphreys in the playoffs. “That guy is the best player we’ve faced this season by far,” Humphreys said.

Woodbridge scored its other goal late in injury time when Mike Bartholemew timed a corner kick from Jacobs perfectly, heading it into the top corner.
