The Time Is Right for Newbury Park : Girls’ basketball: Division III-AA title is Parvin’s first with Panthers after 21 seasons.

Nori Parvin has been a regular at Southern Section championship events for years.

She served as the time-clock operator at the last 12 girls’ basketball championships.

However, it wasn’t until this, her 21st season as coach at Newbury Park High, that she actually brought a uniformed team with her.

Her Panthers made the wait worthwhile, defeating Bishop Montgomery, 60-50, on Saturday at the Pyramid for the Division III-AA title.

“Not doing the 30-second clock was fun,” Parvin said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

The result was the norm for Newbury Park (28-1), which notched its 23rd consecutive victory behind an all-senior starting lineup.

The Panthers, who defeated their three previous postseason opponents, 194-82, had a tougher time with the young Knights (24-5).

Forward Jann Thorpe scored 17 points and Kara McKeown added 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Panthers, who led, 14-10, after one quarter.

Despite a 16-point deficit (52-36), the second-seeded Knights continued to scrap. But in the end, Newbury Park had too much depth and too many weapons.

Guard Renee Intlekofer scored 11 points and Amy Berman came off the bench to add 10 points. Point guard Julie Wastell had six points and six assists for the Panthers, the state’s top-ranked Division III team, which will compete in the state playoffs beginning Tuesday.

Newbury Park dominated the boards, outrebounding Bishop Montgomery, 41-29.

McKeown finished the first half with 12 rebounds, one less than the Knights, who didn’t have a senior on their roster.

The Panthers also were deadly from the free-throw line, outscoring Bishop Montgomery, 20-3. Newbury Park, which shot only 35% from the field, made 20 of 24 foul shots.

Tashara Carter scored 20 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter for Bishop Montgomery, which had won nine consecutive games.
