Master’s Trio Win Far West Basketball Honors

James Mosley of The Master’s College has been selected as NAIA Far West Region Independents men’s basketball player of the year, and Mustang mentor Bill Oates has received coach-of-the-year honors for the second consecutive season.

Mosley, a 6-foot-3 junior forward from Tacoma (Wash.) Baptist High, averaged 18.4 points and 5.3 rebounds a game during the regular season for Master’s (28-4), which will play Western New Mexico on Monday in the championship game of the Far West Region Independents tournament at Chapman University at 8 p.m.

Mike Penberthy (17.3 ppg, 6.3 assists), a 6-3 sophomore point guard from Fresno Hoover High, also was named to the All-Far West Region team.

Bowling

Top qualifier Eric Forkel of Chatsworth fell to David Traber of Woodstock, Ill., 217-214, Saturday in the stepladder final of the Professional Bowlers Assn. Greater Baltimore Open.

Football

USC-bound Birmingham High linebacker Marvin Powell is one of seven local football players named to the California squad that will face a Texas team in the California-Texas Shrine All-Star game, July 22, at Cal State Fullerton.
