HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Calabasas Stops Hart on Cohen’s Four-Hitter

In a game that matches two of best teams in the region, Calabasas High defeated Hart, 1-0, Tuesday on Brandon Cohen’s four-hitter in a Westside tournament game at Calabasas.

The Coyotes (2-0) scored in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases-loaded fielding error by shortstop Chad Ott of Hart (1-2).

Ott could not make a play on a hard ground ball by Billy Hoover, allowing Josh Goldfield to score.

Cohen (1-0) allowed five base runners, struck out two and walked one.

Hart reliever Brandon Hosaka (0-1) took the loss.

Montclair Prep 3, Rio Mesa 2--Evan Holloway’s two-run, two-out double in the fifth inning gave the Mounties (1-2) the lead in a Westside tournament Red Division game at the Mission Hills Senior League field.

Montclair Prep’s Brad Warner came on in relief with the bases loaded and none out in the seventh and retired the side on two popups and a strikeout.

Rio Mesa (1-2) was the preseason No. 1 team in Division II of the Southern Section.

Santa Paula 13, St. Bonaventure 6--Sophomore Gil Segovia hit a grand slam in his first varsity at-bat in a nonleague game at Santa Paula.

Segovia added a run-scoring single for the Cardinals (1-0).

Franklin 10, Grant 4--Steve Hamm went three for three for the Lancers (0-2) in a San Fernando Tournament game at Grant.

Agoura 5, Cleveland 4--Pat Costello hit a two-out, bases loaded single for the Chargers (1-1) in the ninth inning of a San Fernando Tournament game at Agoura.

Chris Vasquez went two for three for Cleveland (1-1).

Beverly Hills 5, Canyon 3--Jason Willis had a two-run home run for the Cowboys (0-2) in a Westside Tournament game at Canyon.

Poly 4, San Fernando 3--Ninth batter Jose Soto drove in all four runs for the Parrots (1-2) in a San Fernando Tournament victory over the Tigers (1-2). Soto drove in the game-winning run with a two-out double in the sixth inning.

Ventura 8, Taft 1--Cougar right fielder Chad Anderson hit a two-run home run in the third inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and leading Ventura (2-1) in a Westside Tournament Red Division game at Ventura.

Anderson had three RBIs. Matt Williams pitched 5 1/3 innings for Ventura, allowing one unearned run and two hits.

Thousand Oaks 6, Birmingham 4--Junior Ryan Lane struck out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the victory for the Lancers (1-1) in a San Fernando Valley tournament pool play game.

Ryan Holmes was two for four with two RBIs for Thousand Oaks. The Tigers’ Fernando Santana was three for four.

Chaminade 7, Palisades 0--Junior right-hander Gabe Crecion pitched a two-hitter, struck out eight and walked none for the Eagles (3-0) in a Westside tournament game at Palisades.

Ryan Hamill was two for four with three RBIs and hit his second home run of the season for Chaminade.

Chatsworth 8, Camarillo 7--Nathan Kaup’s fielding error in the bottom of the seventh allowed Tony Ardito to score the winning run in a Westside Tournament game at Chatsworth.

Kaup bobbled Matt Evanson’s grounder with one out and the bases loaded.

Chatsworth let a 6-2 lead slip away as Camarillo tied the game, 7-7, in the sixth.

Ardito was two for three with a double and three RBIs for Chatsworth (1-1). Joe Borchard hit a solo homerun in the second for Camarillo (2-1).

El Camino Real 12, North Hollywood 1--Mike Cohn struck out 10 and walked none to lead the Conquistadors in a San Fernando tournament game at North Hollywood.

Conquistadore Matt Cowie had a two-run home run in the fifth.

Sylmar 4, Alemany 3--Rafael Velazco had nine strikeouts and went the distance for the Spartans (2-1). Chris Ruley added a two-run single for Sylmar.
