Facts and Figures: Ocean View will be the favorite to win the league’s first title because of pitcher Kathy Ponce (0.20 ERA and county-high 187 strikeouts), who can match any pitcher in the county. But the Seahawks’ problems are on offense. They can’t win if they can’t score.. . . Rosary lacks a pitcher of Ponce’s stature, but might field the best lineup, including left-fielder Regina Martin (.405), and is bolstered by the addition of twins Lesley and Laura Fulton--two infielders from Mater Dei. . . . There are those in the coaching community who think Westminster’s Kelly Hauxhurst is the county’s best-fielding outfielder.

Highlights: Ocean View was the only one of these teams to qualify for an outright playoff berth. Tustin played a wild-card game. Both teams lost. Ocean View was beaten, 1-0, by San Gabriel Valley champion Cerritos in 14 innings. . . . Kathy Ponce and Kelly Hauxhurst were first-team all-league in the Sunset League, and Tustin’s Katie Scheuerman and Saddleback’s Linsey Buendia were first-teamers in the Sea View League.
