HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Panthers No Match For Royal

Share

Newbury Park High volleyball Coach Kevin Judd knows all about Royal.

He played junior varsity volleyball there in the late 1980s.

He also coached the Royal alumni team in a reunion match last week.

But Judd’s trip to Royal Wednesday night was one he would rather forget.

His inexperienced Panthers didn’t pose much of a threat during a 15-3, 15-3, 15-2 loss to Royal in a Marmonte League opener.

The Highlanders (1-1) dominated every facet and scored nine points directly off serves, six on winners and three on aces.

“Royal’s got so much experience, it’s tough,” said Judd. “It’s going to take a lot of work for us to pick up a win next time versus Royal.”

The frightening part is that Royal--which lost in the Southern Section Division II finals last year and moved to Division I this season--is only going to get better.

Two sophomores start for the Highlanders, and junior Joe Olsen played a prominent part Wednesday, finishing with five kills and four blocks.

Andrew Gagnon, one of only two seniors on the Newbury Park roster, led the team with five kills.
