El Salvador League Game Opens Soccer Doubleheader at Coliseum

Share

A little soccer history will occur at the Coliseum tonight when teams from El Salvador’s first division--Luis Angel Firpo and El Roble--meet in the first half of an international doubleheader.

It will be the first El Salvador league game, with the outcome affecting the standings, to have been played outside that country.

Firpo, which played Necaxa of Mexico before 43,000 at the Coliseum earlier this month, faces El Roble at 7 p.m.

The second game pits Mexico’s hugely popular Chivas of Guadalajara against Reggiana of the Italian first division. Chivas tied Club America, 0-0, before 120,000 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Sunday.

Reggiana’s team includes Nigerian World Cup star Sunday Oliseh, as well as Portuguese national team players Paulo Futre and Rui Aguas, and former Italian national team players Luigi de Agostini and Fernando de Napoli.

The Guadalajara-Reggiana game is scheduled for 9 p.m.
