HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Stingy Ventura Slips Past Hueneme Behind Pierce’s 5-Hitter

Jeremy Pierce pitched a five-hitter and Monty Moritz drove in a run for Ventura High in a 1-0 victory over Hueneme in a Channel League baseball game Tuesday at Ventura.

Pierce (3-0) faced 25 batters. He walked none and struck out two. The Cougars (5-1, 2-0) have won their first two Channel League games by 1-0 scores. Ventura has given up only nine runs in five games.

Moritz and Chad Anderson each had two hits for Ventura.

Josh Towers (2-1) gave up his first run of the season for Hueneme (8-1, 2-1). He had two doubles.

Campbell Hall 5, Viewpoint 0--Erik Rasmussen pitched five scoreless innings and Brian Kriegler pitched the final two for the Vikings (3-2) in a nonleague game at Calabasas High. Kriegler also had two RBIs.

Village Christian 4, Flintridge Prep 1--David Gustafson had two hits and scored two runs, and Mike Gallegos added two hits and drove in a run for the Crusaders (6-0) in a nonleague game at Village Christian. Dave Swanson (2-0) gave up one earned run over seven innings.

Moorpark 6, Nordhoff 0--Justin Ames struck out eight in a Frontier League game at Moorpark. The Musketeers (2-4, 1-1) benefited from four errors by Nordhoff (4-4, 1-1).

Birmingham 6, Granada Hills 5--Jimmy Uline had a home run and a double for the Braves (4-4, 1-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Kennedy d. Chatsworth, 15-8, 15-9, 15-13--Mike Whitmore had 11 kills for the Golden Cougars (5-1, 2-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Chatsworth.

Chris Wilson had 14 kills for Chatsworth (2-4, 2-1).

Cleveland d. Taft, 15-8, 15-11, 5-15, 11-15, 16-14--Alan Javan had eight kills to lead the Cavaliers (2-4, 1-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Cleveland.

Providence d. Holy Martyrs, 15-5, 15-4, 15-2--Jose Tano had 12 kills, Ivan Miller had seven service aces and Bobby Charlemespoone added 26 assists and four service aces for Providence (5-2, 1-1) in a Liberty League match at Holy Martyrs.

Notre Dame d. Chaminade, 15-10, 15-10, 13-15, 12-15, 15-10--Brian Simmers had 18 kills and Mark Adriatico added 14 for the Eagles (2-3, 1-2) in a Mission League match at Chaminade.

Village Christian d. La Canada, 15-4, 15-9, 15-10--Chad Hanson had 14 kills and David Ludwig had nine kills and 28 assists to lead the Crusaders (6-0) in a nonleague match at Village Christian.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 5, Kennedy 2--Justin Graham and Evan Press had singles victories and each moved to 6-1 in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Granada Hills. The Highlanders (6-1, 2-1) swept doubles play.

Taft 7, San Fernando 0--The Toreadors (5-0) were without Nos. 1 and 2 singles players Dylan Mann and Golan Sassoon, but still handled the Tigers easily. Ali Fatourechi and Eilon Artzi, who usually play at Nos. 3 and 4, moved up and each won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Notre Dame 12, Saugus 6--Bret Williams and Jason Rudolph each swept three singles matches for Notre Dame (4-2) in a nonleague match at Valley College.

Crespi 12, Burroughs 9--Alex Quinn and Matt Makowski, Crespi’s No. 3 doubles team, swept their sets to lead the Celts (4-1) in a match at Burroughs.

SOFTBALL

Camarillo 7, Channel Islands 1--Jessica Ziese had two doubles and drove in three runs for the Scorpions (4-1, 1-0) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Cornerstone Christian 18, Faith Baptist 1--Cornerstone’s scoreless-inning streak ended at 22 when Sara Seifert scored for the Contenders on an error in the first inning of a nonleague game at Cornerstone.

Cornerstone (5-0) has outscored its opponents, 77-1.

DIVING

Marmonte League triple-dual meet--Benj Thall of Thousand Oaks scored 246.10 to place first in the boys’ competition of a dual meet with Camarillo at Rancho-Simi Park pool. Dory Apgar of Thousand Oaks won the girls’ competition with a score of 218.05.

Newbury Park’s Charles Law, who scored 235.20, was the boys’ winner in a dual meet against Westlake at the same pool.

Tracy Thall of Westlake won the girls’ division with a score of 222.50.

In a third dual meet between Agoura and Royal, the Highlanders’ Kim Williamson (198.75) and Paul Janousek (175.00) placed first in the girls’ and boys’ divisions.
