HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Switch to Softball Smooth for Newbury Park’s Fox

Kristi Fox of Newbury Park High, the Times’ Ventura County player of the year in 1994, made a belated but impressive season debut Wednesday, pitching a no-hitter to lead the Panthers to a 2-0 victory over Thousand Oaks in a Marmonte League opener at Thousand Oaks.

It was the first start of the season for Fox, a junior who until last week was playing for the school’s basketball team that reached the state final in Oakland. Fox struck out five and walked one for the Panthers (2-1). She pitched 5 2/3 innings before allowing a baserunner.

Julie Zuckman hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Jessica Davenport struck out seven and gave up two hits for Thousand Oaks (3-3-1).

Alemany 7, Harvard-Westlake 0--Senior Sophie Contreraz pitched her second no-hitter and was an error away from a perfect game in a Mission League opener.

Angela Rivera had three hits and drove in a run for Alemany (8-1).

El Camino Real 10, San Fernando 0--Tami Jones and Kristin Gutekunst each had three hits for the Conquistadores (10-1, 2-0 in league play) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.

Courtney Henderson added two hits and two runs. Lili Hernandez had three hits, including a triple, for San Fernando (4-6, 0-2).

Cleveland 7, Taft 3--Eva Friedberg tripled and singled to lead the Cavaliers (4-3, 1-1) in a Northwest Valley League game at Taft (1-5, 0-2). Tammy Wilhite doubled and drove in a run.

Kyle Brown hit a triple for Taft.

La Canada 2, Chaminade 1--Senior Lindsay Parker pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead La Canada (4-1) to a nonleague victory at Chaminade. Parker and teammate Shannon Smith had run-scoring singles.

Village Christian 6, Western Christian 5--Jessie Leivo singled to drive in Laura Robbins in the eighth inning of an Alpha League game at Village Christian.

Leivo had three hits and drove in four runs for the Crusaders (4-1, 0-1).

Cornerstone Christian 19, Laguna Blanca 2--Karen Breshears and Julia Tamai both hit for the cycle for Cornerstone Christian (6-0) in a Condor League opener at Laguna Blanca shortened to five innings.

Tamai drove in six runs, Breshears five. Breshears pitched her third consecutive no-hitter, striking out 10.

Kennedy 4, Chatsworth 1--Kelly Morman and Elaine Pacheco tripled for the Cougars (8-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Sophomore Sandra Durazo pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts for Kennedy.

Burroughs 4, Arroyo 1--Olivia Sullivan had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run to lead the Indians (4-2) to a nonleague victory at Burroughs.

Holly Squire had two hits and an RBI and Jennifer Tyler had two hits.

BASEBALL

Channel Islands 6, Newbury Park 0--Senior right-hander Kenny Long (1-2) pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts in a Marmonte League opener at Newbury Park.

Armando Magallanes and Jared Krehbiel each hit solo home runs for Channel Islands (3-5).

Agoura 2, Westlake 1--Chris Cicuto’s two-run single in the second inning paced Agoura (6-2) in a Marmonte League opener at Agoura.

Senior right-hander Tyler Taylor (1-2) struck out four and scattered three singles.

Royal 9, Thousand Oaks 6--Dorian Stitt had three hits, including a double and a RBI for the Highlanders (6-2, 1-0) in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Catcher Steve Yeager homered for Thousand Oaks.

Chaminade 12, Harvard-Westlake 8--Jason Giovannettone and Kevin Lohman each delivered two-run singles in the Eagles’ eight-run, fifth-inning rally during a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake. Giovannettone had three hits and Ryan Hamill added three hits for the Eagles (6-3, 2-1), who benefited from 14 Harvard-Westlake walks.

Spencer Hudnut had two hits, scored two runs and slugged a three-run home run for the Wolverines (0-7, 0-3).

Crespi 12, North Torrance 9--The Celts scored six runs in the eighth inning, then survived a North Torrance rally in a consolation game of the El Segundo tournament.

Brian Luderer and Chris Crawley each scored three runs for Crespi (2-6). Crawley drove in three runs, Luderer two.

Buckley 6, Oakwood 2--T.J. Jackson pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, hit a triple and drove in a run for the Griffins (2-3, 1-1) in a Liberty League game at Oakwood.

Hoover 6, Pasadena 0--David Romero pitched a one-hitter for Hoover (2-4, 1-1) in a Pacific League victory at Hoover. Teammate Frank Diaz had two hits and an RBI.

Oak Park 2, Fillmore 0--Cameron Macarelli pitched a one-hitter with three strikeouts for the Eagles (2-1, 2-0) in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.

Crescenta Valley 6, Glendale 4--Jesse Daggett doubled, tripled, drove in a run and scored a run for the Falcons (5-0, 2-0) in a Pacific League at Glendale.

L.A. Baptist 12, Santiam Christian 3--Seth Barkley had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs to lead the Knights (4-1) in a nonleague game at L.A. Baptist. Mark Lacson went three for three with two RBIs.

BOY’S VOLLEYBALL

Grant d. Reseda, 15-4, 15-6, 15-13--George Garcia had 12 kills and Eddie Yoon added 11 for Grant in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Reseda.

Sherman Oaks CES d. Downtown Business Magnet, 15-4, 15-2, 15-7--Nick Levendosky led the Knights (3-2, 3-0) with three blocks and nine kills in a Magnet League match at Sherman Oaks.

Teammate Nick Avlas had a season-high 28 assists.

Van Nuys d. Poly, 15-4, 15-6, 15-4--Jerry Lai and Ricardo Hernandez each had 12 kills to help the Wolves (6-0, 3-0), to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory over the Parrots (1-5, 1-2) at Van Nuys.

Setter Benedicto Santiago had 32 assists for the Wolves.

GOLF

Westlake 359, Newbury Park 400, Calabasas 404--Medalist Ross Fulgentis of Westlake shot a one-under-par 69 in a nonleague match at Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks. Teammate Brandon Ditullio shot 70.

Scott Porter shot 75 to lead Newbury Park.
