COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Becker Powers Cal Lutheran Over Occidental

John Becker had three hits, including his fourth home run, to lead Cal Lutheran to a 10-1 victory over Occidental in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Friday at Occidental.
The Kingsmen (9-7, 5-5), ranked 24th in Division III, have won nine of 11 games since starting the season 0-5.
Both victories this week have come against nationally ranked opponents--second-ranked Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday and No. 25 Occidental Friday.
Kirk Fellows and Gilbert Benitez each had two hits for the Kingsmen and Becker had three runs batted in.
Jesus Melgoza (2-2) gave up only four hits to Occidental (10-13, 8-5).
Canyons 3, Bakersfield 2--Bobby Cowan gave up two runs in seven innings and Brad Coukos pitched two hitless innings for the save in a Western State Conference game at Canyons.
Chris Tashima had two hits and drove in a run for the Cougars (9-13, 5-3).
Ventura 8, Moorpark 2--Brandon Knight (7-1) pitched his seventh complete game and homered twice for host Ventura (11-6-1, 5-3) in a WSC North Division victory.
Knight struck out nine and walked seven while scattering eight hits.
Jason Adamson and Aaron Whitley each had two hits for Moorpark (15-7, 5-3).
SOFTBALL
Canyons 3, Cuesta 1--Jennifer Sprague had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in a run for the Cougars in a Western State Conference game at Canyons. Tricia Beer and Lisa Kelley each had two hits for Canyons (11-8, 3-3).
Moorpark 1, Pierce 0--Kelly Lovato (8-5) gave up two hits and scored the only run on two Pierce errors in the first inning for the Raiders (9-7, 6-0) in a WSC game. Pierce’s Mandy Villasenor gave up two hits.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Santa Clara 5, CS Northridge 4--Freshmen Jennifer Chapman, Asa Arola and Lilian Ore recorded straight-set victories in singles for the Matadors (4-11) in a nonconference match at Northridge.
Monica Kocian and Nhu Bui won Northridge’s lone match in doubles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over twins Jill and Jamie Hamilton.
