It’s official.

The addition of a women’s soccer team was unanimously approved by Cal State Northridge’s Educational Policies Committee, clearing the way for the sport to be added in the fall.

The addition means the Matadors will field teams in 19 intercollegiate sports in the 1995-96 year, Northridge Athletic Director Bob Hiegert said.

Northridge will compete in women’s soccer at the varsity level with a limited schedule.

“With the passage of the referendum this spring, we are very happy to finally add women’s soccer as an intercollegiate sport,” Hiegert said in a statement released by the school.

“It is our intention to schedule contests beginning this fall and we are encouraging anyone currently enrolled or interested in enrolling at a four-year institution to consider Cal State Northridge as a place where they could compete in soccer at an NCAA Division I level.”

Hiegert said the Valley has a strong tradition in soccer and that any women interested in participating should contact the athletic department.

A nationwide search to fill the women’s soccer coaching position is already under way.

Northridge is also seeking full-time coaches for football and women’s basketball.

A full-time assistant’s position also is available in football.

Cycling

John Wordin of West Hills won the Exeter Road Race on Saturday in Exeter, Calif.

The 60-mile race was part of the Sequoia Cycling Classic.

Wordin, an assistant football coach at Granada Hills High, rides for the Valley-based Nutra-Fig cycling team.

The event continues today.
