Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley high schools are only a few miles from each other, but they proved Monday that the styles of their girls’ track and field teams are worlds apart.
The Barons held off the host Oilers, 65-62, outscoring Huntington Beach 36-9 in the six field events, making up for Huntington Beach’s 53-29 advantage in the 10 running events in a Sunset League opener.
“I had confidence in our field events,” Baron Coach Dan Moran said. “I knew they were strong in the sprints.”
Senior Eileen Dunaway won four events for the Oilers, finishing the 100 in 12.6 seconds, the 200 meters in 26.2 and anchoring the 400 and 1,600 relays.
The Barons won all but the high jump in the field, and secured victories on the track from sophomore Angie Winkler.
Winkler won the 1,600 (5:30.6) and 3,200 (12:42) and finished second in the 800 (2:25.9).
Crissy Tolson won the shotput with a toss of 39-0.
Jess Strutzel won the 400 and 800 to lead the Huntington Beach boys (2-0) to a 74-62 victory. Strutzel, a transfer from La Quinta who was running in his first meet after becoming eligible Friday, won the 400 in 51.9 and the 800 in 2:03.4.
Fountain Valley long jumper Phong Vu won the event in 22 feet 0 1/2 inches, the county’s top mark this season.
Sophomore Tony Trueba won two events, winning the 1,600 (4:34.2) and the 3,200 (9:52.0), for the Oilers (2-0).
Senior Matt Byrd won the high jump in 6-4, an inch below his personal best, for Fountain Valley (1-1).
