HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Village Christian Ready to Dominate Its League

Village Christian High took the inside track for the Alpha League boys’ volleyball title by beating Campbell Hall Tuesday night, 15-12, 15-10, 15-9, at Village Christian in a battle of two high-ranking teams in Southern Section Division III.

“I don’ know if the scores sound like it was a quick match, but it wasn’t,” said Village Christian Coach Steve Levoe. “It was a war.”

Kiko Banos had 11 kills, Chad Hanson had 10 and Kurt Sorenson added seven blocks for the Crusaders (10-0, 3-0), ranked second in Division III. David Ludwig added four kills and 24 assists.

Eric Hassan had 22 kills and Dylan Harrick added 12, and Tim Nolan had 32 assists for Campbell Hall (8-2, 2-1), ranked fourth in Division III.

BASEBALL

Kennedy 6, Taft 2--Sophomore John Garland pitched a six-hitter with eight strikeouts in Kennedy’s Northwest Valley Conference victory over the Toreadors at Taft.

Garland also led a 10-hit attack with a three-run double off Taft’s Dusty Cook. Kennedy (9-3, 5-2) is ranked fifth in The Times’ regional poll.

Mike Rolbin had two hits and drove in a run for Taft (4-7, 3-4).

Ventura 5, Santa Barbara 4--Monty Moritz’s two-out, two-run triple in the seventh inning tied it, 4-4, and Jeremy Glass’ squeeze in the 10th drove in the winning run for the Cougars (8-3, 5-1) in a Channel League game at Ventura.

Granada Hills 11, El Camino Real 3--Tom O’Brien had a two-run single and a two-run triple for the Highlanders (7-4, 4-3) in a Northwest Valley game at Granada Hills.

Adrian Torres added a three-run home run and Jarrod Penwarden had a double and a triple for Granada Hills.

Sylmar 11, Reseda 0--Twelve Regent errors contributed to the Spartans’ 11 unearned runs in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.

Rafael Velazco (4-0) allowed three hits over six innings. Rene Zavala had two hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs for Sylmar (8-2, 6-1).

Birmingham 9, San Fernando 2--Sophomore right-hander Alberto Flores (3-1) scattered five hits and went two for two to lead the Braves in a Northwest Valley game. Pedro Rodriguez, Jason Barbanell and Jimmy Uline each added two hits.

Adolfo Salcido had two hits for San Fernando (4-6, 2-5).

Chatsworth 6, Cleveland 4--Jon Tucker was three for four, including a two-run double, and drove in three runs for the Chancellors (6-4) in a Northwest Valley game.

Fred Farzeneh and Mike Wexler each had two hits for the Chancellors. Oscar Bocanegrea went the distance, striking out four and giving up nine hits.

For Cleveland (3-7, 2-5), Kelvin Delgado, Casey Roth and Nate Lee each had two hits. Lee had a double and a triple.

Rio Mesa 14, Hueneme 1--Eric Flores had two doubles and Manuel Chavira had two hits for the Spartans (7-4, 4-2) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

The Vikings (9-5, 3-4) walked 15 batters.

Highland 3, Palmdale 1--Jacob Stanwood slugged a two-run triple in the bottom of the six inning to erase a 1-0 deficit in a Golden League victory for the Bulldogs (5-7, 1-0) at Highland.

Carlos Chavez (3-2) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five for the Bulldogs.

Fillmore 3, Faith Baptist 1--Freshman Antonio Tapia, in his first varsity appearance, relieved with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning and struck out Tim Greer to preserve the Flashes’ nonleague victory at Fillmore.

Chris Goodenough (2-2), who combined with four other pitchers on a one-hitter, had a two-run single--the Flashes’ only hit.

Paraclete 17, Mojave 1--Bill Kneifl had three hits, including a double and home run, and five RBIs for the Spirits (4-5, 1-0) in a High Desert League game at Paraclete. Steve McMurtry (1-2) had two hits, including a double, and allowed five hits over five innings.

Rio Mesa 14 Hueneme 1--Eric Flores had two doubles and two RBIs, and Steve Arneson drove in five runs to lead Spartans (7-4, 4-2) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

Manuel Chaivira and Charlie Boch each added two hits and two RBIs for Rio Mesa.

Village Christian 4, Western Christian 3--Senior right-hander David Swanson (4-0) pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh in an Alpha League game.

Robbie Mikels had a run-scoring double to start the two-run rally in the seventh.

Muir 8, Crescenta Valley 5--The Falcons (7-2, 4-2) blew a 2-0 lead after two innings in a Pacific League game. Brian Peterson had two hits for Crescenta Valley.

Glendale 11, Pasadena 2--Junior left-hander Phil Onsaga (2-2) pitched four innings and hit a two-run home run in the fifth in a Pacific League game at Pasadena.

Onsaga was three for four and scored twice. He struck out five and walked one. Mark Martin had a pair of doubles for Glendale (5-3, 3-3).

Poly 4, Van Nuys 0--Pitcher Steve Guerrero threw a three-hitter, striking out six and walking two for Poly (7-4, 6-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Ray Montenegro had two hits, including a run-scoring double in the third.

SOFTBALL

Crescenta Valley 19, Muir 0--Danielle Ferreira (4-0) pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10, and Elizabeth Barnes had three hits, including a grand slam for the Falcons (10-1, 1-0) in a Pacific League game at Muir.

Reseda 2, Sylmar 1--Rosie Yeatts (6-0) threw a four-hitter and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom the sixth of a Valley Pac-8 game.

The Regents (11-0, 5-0) are ranked 10th in The Times’ area poll. Cherise Espinosa (5-3) threw a two-hitter for Sylmar (7-5, 4-1).

Monroe 6, Canoga Park 0--Kelley Hall (5-3) stuck out 14, walked one and did not allow a hit until Liz Vazquez’s triple with two out in the seventh in a Valley Pac-8 game. The game ended when Vazquez was thrown out trying to steal home.

Lupe Brambila had a three-run home run in the fifth and Monica Espitia had a two-run homer in the fourth for the Vikings (7-3, 5-0).

Buena 5, Oxnard 0--Nicole Greathouse (4-1) struck out eight and allowed five hits for the Bulldogs (10-2, 6-0) in a Channel League victory at Oxnard. Jeane Ramirez had two hits for Oxnard (4-8, 1-5).

Poly 5, North Hollywood 4--With two out in the bottom of the eighth, Alida Gray singled, stole second and scored the winning run on Teresa Medina’s single to right. Gray also had a triple. Poly’s Mary Casillas (2-1) threw four shutout innings in relief.

Westlake 3, Thousand Oaks 1--Kelly DeArman pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 for the Warriors (10-3, 3-2) in a Marmonte League game. Kathy Davie’s two-run single in the fifth broke a 1-1 tie.

Newbury Park 5, Agoura 1--Emily Webster hit a two-run triple to key a four-run third for the Panthers (7-2, 6-1) in a Marmonte League game. Kristi Fox (6-1) pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Hart 9, Burbank 1--Tracy Clark had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run, and Kellie Nordhagen added two hits as the Indians (10-2, 1-0) ended a two-game losing streak. Jenny Arzola had two hits and three stolen bases.

Camarillo 4, Royal 0--Julie Borchard belted a triple and drove in a run, and Melanie Richardson (6-1) allowed six hits and struck out four in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Simi Valley 7, Channel Islands 0--Juniors Lisa DeStefano and Chrissy Gates combined on a no-hitter in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley. DeStefano struck out five in four innings and Gates struck out four.

Kim Gray had a three-run triple in the second inning for Simi Valley (5-4, 3-2).

Arcadia 1, Hoover 0--Carol Wallace scored from third on a wild pitch by Tina Kinney with two out in the ninth of a Pacific League opener.

Jacki Zwik allowed one hit and struck out six, while Kinney gave up three hits and struck out seven for Hoover (7-7, 0-1).

Ventura 9, Santa Barbara 4--Amanda Menez had a three-run triple for the Cougars (2-7, 2-3) in a Channel League victory. Ventura stranded 12 runners.

St. Genevieve 14, Bishop Conaty-Loretto 1--Stacy Champy (3-4) allowed one hit over four innings and struck out 10, and also had two triples and a home run, driving in three runs for the Valiants (4-5, 1-0).

La Reina 2, Oak Park 0-Jennifer Baltruzak had eight strikeouts and no walks over nine innings to lead La Reina (8-5, 2-0) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Opposing pitcher Kaylene Boldroff struck out nine and walked two.

Saugus 22, Canyon 1--Kelli Kranz hit for the cycle, driving in five runs for the Centurions in a Foothill League game at Canyon.

Jeanine Giordano was three for five and drove in four runs. The Centurions (7-3, 1-0) collected a season-high 26 hits.

Calabasas 7, Moorpark 0--The Coyotes (5-2, 5-1) moved into a first-place tie with Moorpark in the Frontier League.

Keyna Bell had three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Melissa Krolick pitched a two-hitter for Calabasas.
