Twelve boys basketball players from San Gabriel Valley-area schools were selected to the All-Southern Section first team in their divisions by the Amateur Athletic Foundation-First Interstate Bank selection board.

Nogales guard Shomario Richard and Temple City forward Rico Harris were selected to the All-Southern Section team.

Divisional honorees include:

Division I: Richard, Glendora guard Greg Jacobsen, Alhambra forward Mike Contreras and Rowland forward Donte Quinine.

Division II: Harris, Pasadena forwards Gordon Scott and Derek Hodges, Muir guard Duane Curtis and Wilson guard Willie Allen.

Division III: Duarte forward Chris Moreland.

Division V: Pasadena Poly forward David Newhall and center Robert Reeder.

* Six area basketball coaches have been chosen to guide boys and girls basketball teams in San Gabriel Valley all-star games April 28 and 29 at Glendora High.

Four boys teams will compete in a two-day tournament and two girls teams will play a one-game championship.

Boys’ coaches include Bob Withers of Nogales (East), Mike Swanegan of Duarte (South), Jim Wetmore of Alhambra (North) and Rocky Moore of Muir (West).

Girls’ coaches are Bill Wakeley of San Dimas (East) and Ralph Punaro of South Pasadena (West).

* Some of the nation’s premier high school track and field athletes will be competing Saturday when the 28th annual Arcadia/Foot Locker Invitational is held at Arcadia High.

Sprinters Deworski Odom of Overbrook High in Philadelphia, Bryan Howard of Canyon Springs, Char Foster of Clearwater Central Catholic (Fla.) and Malika Edmondson of Playa del Rey St. Bernard are among those scheduled to compete. Top locals include Chris McAlister of Pasadena and Obea Moore and Heather Sumpter of Muir.

Distance standouts will include Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa, the national cross-country champion.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Mary Morgan of Pasadena City College is proving to be one of the most versatile local community college athletes.

Morgan, a freshman from Bonita High, led the PCC volleyball team in kills this season and helped lead the Lancers to a 17-4 record. This spring she is undefeated in conference swimming meets in the 100-meter breaststroke.

* Joe Hernandez of Mount San Antonio College entered the week as the leading hitter in the South Coast Conference with a .455 average.

Mountie pitcher Ralph Cadima was 4-0 with a 1.58 earned-run average, which ranked third in the conference.

* The 37th annual Mount San Antonio College Relays will be staged April 13-15 at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut.

The open meet will be preceded with a week of competition at the junior high, high school, community college, university and master’s divisions. The event is expected to attract more than 15,000 participants, including an array of world-class performers.

COLLEGES

Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team vaulted to the top of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. standings last week by sweeping Cal State Los Angeles in a four-game series.

Pomona entered the week 20-17 and tied for first with Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA at 6-4.

Pomona plays a four-game series with San Bernardino this week.

Senior outfielder Noel Magpoc is batting .348 for the Broncos. Pitcher Joe Ramirez is 6-5.

* Azusa Pacific’s baseball team, ranked 18th in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics, entered the week 22-7 and 13-2 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

The Cougars split four games last week, losing nonconference contests against Cal Baptist and Cal Lutheran before sweeping a GSAC doubleheader against Concordia.

Brian Hagerty is 8-0 with a 2.09 earned-run average for the Cougars, who travel to Westmont Saturday for a GSAC doubleheader. Ruben Niebla is 8-2 with a 2.90 ERA.

* Pete Kula of Pomona-Pitzer began the week needing eight hits to tie the school record of 56 hits in a season.

Kula, a junior, was batting .500 with 48 hits and 21 multiple-hits games.

* Dawn Castaneda of the Azusa Pacific softball team extended her hitting streak to 17 games last week and teammate Liz Campbell had her 15-game hitting streak snapped in a GSAC loss to Cal Baptist.

Castaneda is batting .446 with 25 RBI for Azusa Pacific, which entered the week 17-12 and 9-3 in the GSAC.

Dawn Hebert has pitched consecutive shutouts for the Cougars, who were tied with Cal Baptist for first place. Hebert is 3-1 with a 0.28 ERA.

* The 1995 Xenia Anastasiadou memorial women’s tennis tournament will be held Friday at Cal Poly Pomona.

The four-team tournament includes Pomona, Rollins College, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Bakersfield, Portland State, UC Riverside and Northern Colorado.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Krystal Walden, West Covina--Walden won the girls’ 100- and 200-meter races at the Bishop Amat Relays last weekend at Mt. San Antonio College.

Walden won the 100 in 12.09 seconds, the 200 in 24.91 seconds.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Dominique Hughes, Cal Poly Pomona--Hughes, a freshman who graduated from Ganesha High, set a school record with a mark of 40 feet, 9 1/2 inches in the triple jump at a meet at UC Irvine.

Hughes’ mark qualified her for the NCAA Division II championships.

MISCELLANY

The 29th annual Mt. Wilson Trail Run will be staged Monday beginning in Sierra Madre. The 8.6-mile race features an elevation gain of almost 2,100 feet. Entry is limited to 300 competitors. Information: (818) 355-2355.

* Applications are being accepted for the Crown Valley Senior Games for athletes 50 and older as of May 6. Competition will be staged in five-year age divisions, up to and including age 95. Information: (818) 397-4062.

* The city of Pasadena has begun registration for a girls’ softball league for players ages 13 to 17.

There is no charge for participation in the league, which will begin play April 14 at Brookside and Robinson parks. High school players are eligible after their seasons end.

* A golf tournament sponsored by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for June 19 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.
