The Coliseum Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to immediately begin construction of a new federally funded $5.6-million press box on the Coliseum rim, but officials said they do not have the financing to build luxury suites now.

Coliseum renovation director Don C. Webb said there are “promising” indications that financing to build at least the first 21 suites will be forthcoming within eight weeks, and commissioners held out the possibility of a start on the suites this year.

Coliseum--The headline in Thursday’s editions on a story about the Coliseum press box and luxury suite construction implied that suite construction has been called off. In fact, it has been delayed.

But, they acknowledged, even if the suites are started, it is too late for them to be ready for the next football season.

The commission, almost out of money, has been hampered in obtaining financing for the boxes by continuing uncertainty about where the Raiders will play next season. Although Commission President John Ferraro recently met with Raider owner Al Davis, Davis has not committed and could play next fall in Anaheim or elsewhere.

Meanwhile, USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett has sent a letter to the commission, saying USC will sign a long-term lease when suite construction begins.
