HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Lemos Goes Long, Short to Beat Simi Valley

Ben Lemos’ three-run home run in the fifth inning and run-scoring single in the sixth enabled Royal High to defeat first-place Simi Valley, 8-5, Friday in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Bryant Lappard pitched the final three innings for the Highlanders, allowing two hits and no runs to earn his first victory.

Back-to-back home runs by Kevin Comell and Neil Oberheide gave the Pioneers (10-3, 5-1) a three-run lead in the third inning, but the Highlanders chipped away with one run each in the third and fourth before the four-run fifth.

Brent Egan had three hits, stole two bases and scored twice for the Highlanders (9-4, 4-2).

Newbury Park 1, Agoura 0--Matt Cassard singled home Mike Amandson with two out in the top of the seventh inning for the Panthers (4-9, 1-5) in a Marmonte League game.

Craig Gladstone (2-1) allowed five hits and struck out seven for Agoura (6-7, 1-5).

Amandson allowed three hits and struck out seven for Newbury Park.

Camarillo 16, Channel Islands 10--Rodell Desamtaro had three hits and three RBIs as the Scorpions (9-4, 4-2) came out on top in a hitting spree with the Raiders in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.

Camarillo’s Mike Muller hit a two-run home run in the third and Dane Saike added a solo homer.

Westlake 7, Thousand Oaks 1--Mike McHargue drove in two runs with a double for the Warriors (9-3, 4-2) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Matt Riordon had two hits, including a double, for Westlake.

Rio Mesa 10, Santa Barbara 1--Marcus Yasutake had two hits and two RBIs and Steve Arneson added three RBIs for the Spartans (8-4, 5-2) in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.

Ventura 10, Oxnard 8--The Cougars jumped to a nine-run lead and held on to beat the Yellowjackets in a Channel League game at Oxnard.

Jeremy Pierce had two hits and three RBIs for the Cougars (9-4, 6-2).

Zack Gayler hit a solo homer for the Yellowjackets (2-11, 0-8).

Canyon 6, Saugus 2--Rob Varnon spoiled the Centurions’ home opener with a three-run home run that keyed a four-run fourth inning for the Cowboys in a Foothill League game.

Ray Armindariz had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the Cowboys (7-7, 2-2).

The Centurions (7-6, 3-2) won three for their first four league games, all on the road.

Calabasas 6, Santa Paula 1--Brett Niles had two home runs and four RBIs, and Tanner Trosper pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Coyotes in a Frontier League game at Calabasas.

Josh Harris had three hits and Mike Melucci added two for the Coyotes (11-0, 7-0).

Nordhoff 4, Moorpark 3--Mike Gardia doubled home the winning run for the Rangers in the bottom of the seventh in a Frontier League victory at Nordhoff.

Gardia struck out eight, walked one and allowed seven hits.

Palmdale 13, Littlerock 5--Chris Paxton and Kevin Harmon homered for the Falcons in a Golden League game at Littlerock.

Bob Roberts went three for three with an RBI for the Lobos (4-11, 0-2).

Quartz Hill 10, Highland 2--Six unearned runs put the Rebels (10-0, 2-0) out of reach in a Golden League game at Highland.

Kevin Wright had two hits, including a run-scoring double, for the Bulldogs (5-8, 1-1).

Darrell Hussman had three hits and drove in three runs for Quartz Hill.

Ridgecrest Burroughs 4, Antelope Valley 1--Chad Kressler had an RBI single in the second inning for the Antelopes (2-9, 0-2) in a Golden League game at Ridgecrest.

St. Francis 3, Notre Dame 1--The Golden Knights used single runs in each of the first three innings to edge the Knights in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Chris Crowley had two hits, including a double, for Notre Dame (5-5-1, 3-3-1).

Paul Diaz did not allow an earned run for St. Francis (7-5, 4-3).

Crespi 6, Chaminade 5--Barry Matthews went four for four with an RBI and struck out six for the Celts (6-7, 4-3) in a Mission League game at Chaminade.

Dean Robb pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning for his second save.

Gabe Crecion went three for three with an RBI for the Eagles (7-7, 2-5).

Loyola 4, Harvard-Westlake 2--Ari Isaacson (0-4), who pitched a four-hitter, was the victim of four unearned runs scored by the Cubs in the third inning of the Mission League game.

Spencer Hudnut had a two-run double for the Wolverines (0-11, 0-7).

Paraclete 7, Desert 3--Raul Gutierrez highlighted a five-run first inning with a two-run home run for the Spirit (5-5, 2-0) in a High Desert League game at Paraclete.

Gutierrez (4-1) went the distance for Paraclete, striking out seven, allowing five hits and walking two. Robbie Wood had two hits and stole two bases for Paraclete.

Hoover 1, Pasadena 0--Amador Solis faced the minimum of 21 batters and drove in the only run with a third-inning double for the Tornadoes (4-7, 3-4) in a Pacific League game.

Solis allowed two hits, walked three, had 13 strikeouts and picked three runners off first base.

Frank Diaz, who scored the run, had three hits, including two doubles, for Hoover.

Oak Park 13, Fillmore 1--Brent Schneider had two hits and three RBIs for the Eagles in a Tri-Valley League game at Fillmore.

Scott Christenson added two hits and two RBIs for Oak Park (5-2, 5-1).

L.A. Baptist 10, Kilpatrick 1--John Wilson (4-1) pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and four walks for the Knights (12-1, 4-0) in an Alpha League game at L.A. Baptist.

A walk, two stolen bases and a ground ball to first in the sixth gave the Mustangs (6-3, 1-3) their run.

Bell-Jeff 7, Murphy 2--David Matekel hit a three-run homer for the Guards in the first inning of a Santa Fe League game at Bell-Jeff.

John Pawlik struck out 10 batters for Bell-Jeff (8-4, 5-1).

Dos Pueblos 8, Hueneme 3--Josh Towers had a solo homer in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough for the Vikings (9-6, 3-5) in a Channel League game at Dos Pueblos.
