1995 PREP BASKETBALL ALL-STARS : Valley Christian, Poly Players Lead Selections to Girls’ Team

The Valley Christian and Long Beach Poly High girls’ basketball teams had plenty to overcome to win Southern Section titles.

Although it had only one starter returning from its 1993-94 squad, Valley Christian (24-4) won its fourth consecutive Division IV-A title and advanced to the state final for the first time in eight seasons.

Long Beach Poly (25-5), under second-year Coach Stephanie Bassard, who took over after the August, 1993, death of Ed Gaffney, won its second consecutive Moore League title and defeated Peninsula, 62-53, in the Division I-AA final for its first Southern Section title.

Valley Christian and Long Beach Poly are each represented by two players on The Times’ 1995 Southeast/Long Beach all-star team.

Valley Christian is represented by Jodi Parriott and Tandee Taylor. Laneka Allen and Kaidaya Johns represent Long Beach Poly.

Johns was named to the team for the third year in a row. Sherilyn Frazier of Cerritos, Maria Camacho of Pioneer, Reta Sula of Long Beach Jordan and Parriott were chosen for the second year in a row.

Selections were based on ballots cast by area coaches and a poll of Times sportswriters.

Players named to the first team, along with their parents and coaches, will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast Sunday at 9 at the Sheraton in Norwalk. The winners of the Southeast/Long Beach player and coach of the year awards will be announced at the breakfast.

Here is a look at The Times’ 1995 All-Southeast/Long Beach team:

Laneka Allen, Long Beach Poly--The 5-foot-9 senior averaged 18.0 points, four rebounds and three assists. She was chosen to the Moore League first team and the Division I second team.

Angelina Baca, Glenn--A second-team Division III selection, the 5-3 junior guard averaged 20.4 points and 2.4 assists. She averaged more than 23 points in Suburban League play while guiding the Eagles (14-10) to a second-place league finish.

Maria Camacho, Pioneer--The 6-foot-1 junior center already owns eight school records. The two-time Del Rio League most valuable player is the all-time career scoring (1,029) and rebounding leader (890).

She also has set records for most points in a game (38), playoff game (34), season (573) and the best free-throw percentage in a game, making 12 of 15 foul shots for 80%.

A Division III first-team selection, Camacho averaged 22.9 points and 14.2 rebounds for the Del Rio League co-champion and Division III-A quarterfinalist Titans (20-5).

Sherilyn Frazier, Cerritos--A 5-7 junior guard, Frazier earned Division I second-team honors, averaging 13.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists. Her play helped the Dons (21-6) win the Mission Valley League title and advance to the I-A quarterfinals.

Jennifer Gall, Downey--The 5-7 senior was named the Downey tournament most valuable player. She also was selected to all-tournament teams at the El Dorado and Charter Oak events.

The All-San Gabriel Valley League guard averaged 11.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 6.2 assists.

A Division I first-team selection, Gall also set school records for three-point baskets in a season (57) and career (90), and helped the Vikings (22-6) advance to the quarterfinals of the I-A playoffs.

Kaidaya Johns, Long Beach Poly--The 5-8 senior, who averaged 16.2 points, five rebounds and eight assists, scored 24 points in the Jackrabbits’ 62-53 victory over Peninsula in the Division I-AA championship.

She was named to the Division I first team and State Division I team by Student Sports magazine.

Nicole Oliver, Gahr--A 6-0 forward-center, Oliver averaged 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Gladiators (16-10) to third-place finish in the San Gabriel Valley League.

Jodi Parriott, Valley Christian--The 6-2 Parriott, who will attend USC, was selected as the state senior player of the year by Student Sports magazine and the Southern Section Division IV player of the year.

Parriott averaged 24.4 points and 10.1 rebounds, scoring 42 in a victory over Santa Ynez in the Southern California Regional Division IV championship and 36 in the Southern Section Division IV-A final against Crossroads.

Reta Sula, Long Beach Jordan--One of only two sophomores on the Southeast team, the 5-6 guard provided the Panthers with scoring, rebounding, ball handling and defense.

A three-point shooting threat, Sula averaged 19.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.6 steals to lead Jordan (17-7) to second place in the Moore League.

Tandee Taylor, Valley Christian--The Crusaders’ inside force, the 6-2 sophomore center averaged 16.8 points and 10.6 rebounds to earn a place as the only sophomore on the Division IV first team. Taylor, who had 30 points against Santa Ynez in the Southern California Regional final, was also named to the all-state sophomore team by Student Sports magazine.
