SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Some of the best high school quarterbacks and receivers in California will meet at Wilson High to test their abilities June 3 in the second annual Air 7 Quarterback Challenge.

The competition, free to participants and spectators, was a huge success last summer when 64 quarterbacks entered. The contests included distance toss, read and react drill, and running an obstacle course.

Among those trying to qualify for the finals this year include: Robert Loera (Fremont), Reggie Duncan (Manual Arts), Travon Kitchen (Los Angeles), Anthony White (Los Angeles), Rashard McGee (Crenshaw), Sergio Velasquez (South Gate), and Brian McGann and Lupe Sanchez (Wilson).

Steve Clarkson, the events’ coordinator and a former quarterback at Wilson, said the top 50 quarterbacks and top 30 receivers will be selected in advance as entrants for the June 3 finals.

To qualify for the finals, each participant must advance from preliminary competitions that are held every other Saturday.

Last summer’s winners were Los Alamitos junior quarterback Kevin Feterik, who won three of the five events, and Sylmar quarterback Greg Marquez.

Former Carson High Coach Gene Vollnogle, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Perry Klein and Brigham Young quarterback John Walsh were among those who judged last year’s competition.
