The finals in each division start at 1 p.m. and last until 3:30 p.m.

After the competition is a tandem surf exhibition followed by the “Old Log” event in which contestants must use boards that are at least 25 years old and longer than 9 feet.

Football

Rumors that former Hart High quarterback Ryan Connors will play football next season at Valley College are just that, Monarch Athletic Director Chuck Ferrero said Friday.

A newspaper reported earlier this week that Connors, who is serving a 16-month prison sentence for a drunk-driving accident, would play at Valley.

But Ferrero, who the paper named as the source of the information, said he doesn’t know about any plans for Connors to join the Monarchs.

“He is not enrolled here,” Ferrero said. “Nobody knows anything. . . . I never told anyone that he was coming here.”

Monarch Coach Jim Fenwick was on his way to a coaching clinic in Fresno and could not be reached for comment Friday.

Connors, who set a Southern Section passing record with 4,144 yards in his senior season in 1991, was the driver of a car that collided with another vehicle on San Fernando Road in Newhall on July 23, 1993. The other driver was critically injured in the accident.

The Monarchs have several quarterbacks in spring practices, including Zack Hernandez, a former L.A. Baptist High standout.

Baseball

Former Cal Lutheran catcher Hector Lopez has agreed to terms with the Antelope Valley Ravens of the first-year Golden State League.

Pitcher Danny Salazar, who played at Palmdale High, also has signed a contract with the Ravens.

Cross-Country

Sophomores John Colvin and Jill Fuess, and freshman Lisa Loberg of Cal Lutheran have been selected to the 1994 NCAA Division III Academic All-American team.

All three runners maintained a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Viewpoint High is seeking candidates for its vacant head coaching position.

Basketball

Kenyth Henry, a 6-foot-2 guard at Valley College the past two seasons, has signed to play at Montana, Monarch Coach Doug Michelson said Friday.

Henry, from El Camino Real High, averaged 16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds last season. He was a two time All Western State Conference selection.
