Countywide : Cancer Awareness Program Planned
About 60,000 Orange County schoolchildren will be given “Mom-E-Grams” to take home this week, Mother’s Day reminders that regular breast cancer testing can save lives.
The Irvine and Capistrano unified school districts are participating in the breast cancer awareness program, sponsored by the Orange County chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The telegram-style flyers are also available for students and parents in the Newport-Mesa, Garden Grove and Orange school districts.
When diagnosed early, 93% of all breast cancers are curable, according to the Komen Foundation, which sponsors free breast cancer screenings for Orange County women age 40 or older who have limited resources.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 50 and older be screened for breast cancer once a year. During May, screenings will be held in Irvine, Placentia and San Juan Capistrano. The screenings include a mammogram exam, instruction in self-examination and information on breast health.
