HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Flores Sparks Birmingham Win

Alberto Flores pitched a three-hitter and ignited a game-winning rally as Birmingham High came from behind to beat El Camino Real, 3-2, Tuesday in a Northwest Valley Conference baseball game at Birmingham.

The victory moved Birmingham (14-8, 8-5 in conference play) into a first-place tie with El Camino Real (14-7-1, 8-5).

With Birmingham trailing, 2-1, Flores (5-2), singled to lead off the sixth inning, then yielded to pinch-runner Henry Salas. Fernando Centeno doubled to advance Salas to third, and Salas scored on a sacrifice fly by Pedro Rodriguez.

Centeno advanced to third on the play and scored when the ball got away from the catcher.

Monroe 7, Van Nuys 0--Wayne Nix pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts en route to his fourth shutout for the Vikings (15-7, 11-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe. Nix pitched a no-hitter against Canoga Park in his last outing.

Chatsworth 8, Taft 0--Jon Tucker hit a grand slam and Matt Evanson added a triple and a double to lead the Chancellors (12-9, 7-6) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Fred Farzaneh (5-2) allowed four hits and struck out eight.

Granada Hills 11, San Fernando 2--The Highlanders (6-8 in conference) scored six runs in the second inning of a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Canoga Park 6, Reseda 5--Junior Glavan hit a grand slam in the third and David Vargas pitched a complete game for visiting Canoga Park (5-8) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Poly 9, Grant 1--Senior right-hander Hugo De La Torre (8-2) scattered six hits and struck out three in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly. Abel Salazar was three for four for Poly (16-5, 12-1).

Sylmar 13, North Hollywood 0--Steve Zamora had three hits and drove in two runs for the host Spartans (16-5, 10-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Kennedy 17, Cleveland 4--The Golden Cougars (19-3, 11-2) clinched the North Valley League championship at Kennedy. George Kassis had a three-run triple in a six-run second and Aldo Pinto collected four hits for Kennedy.

Saugus 4, Canyon 3--Reliever Brandon Hernandez hit a solo homer to lead off the sixth and Darren Hoevel drove in the go-ahead run on a squeeze later in the inning as Saugus came from behind to win a Foothill League game at Canyon.

Calabasas 15, Santa Paula 1--Mike Melucci hit a grand slam and Jared Sandler pitched a complete game as the Coyotes (20-0, 12-0) clinched the Frontier League title.

Quartz Hill 13, Highland 1--Darrell Hussman (7-1) pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts in his seventh complete game for the host Rebels (13-5) in a Golden League game.

Palmdale 7, Littlerock 0--Chris Paxton had four hits and Tony Haven went the distance, striking out four and walking one for the Falcons (14-7, 6-1) at Palmdale.

Crescenta Valley 3, Glendale 1--Crescenta Valley (16-3, 10-2) rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth in a Pacific League game at Glendale.

Oak Park 4, Carpinteria 3--Tyler Blondi singled home Eric Ruhle with the decisive run as the host Eagles scored four runs in the sixth inning of a Tri-Valley League game.

Nordhoff 1, Moorpark 0--Mike Walsh (3-5) pitched his second one-hitter and had a season-high 12 strikeouts for Nordhoff (8-10, 5-7) in a Frontier League game.

SOFTBALL

Hoover 1, Crescenta Valley 0--Tina Kinney threw a one-hitter and drove in the only run to help the Tornadoes (13-11, 4-3) upset Crescenta Valley (18-3, 6-1) in a Pacific League game at Hoover.

Poly 8, Van Nuys 5--Patty Sandoval collected two hits and four RBIs, including a two-run homer in the third to lead the Parrots (14-5, 7-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly.

Reseda 12, Canoga Park 0--Brenda Lomeli had four hits and four RBIs to lead the Regents (18-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park. Reseda completed an undefeated season capturing their first Mid-Valley League title.

Moorpark 11, Nordhoff 1--Mindy Penrod (9-4) and Christina Fernandez combined on a one-hitter for the Musketeers (14-6, 10-2) in a Frontier League game.

Calabasas 5, Santa Paula 1--Keyna Bell had three hits, including two home runs and three RBIs, for the Coyotes (11-4, 9-3) in a Frontier League game.

Royal 7, Channel Islands 4--Kaelynn Jones struck out seven and walked one for the Highlanders (6-13, 3-8) in a Marmonte League victory over the Raiders (4-15, 0-11) at Royal.

Camarillo 1, Simi Valley 0--Robin Degner scored in the fourth on a fielder’s choice and Julie Borchard threw out a runner at the plate in the sixth to preserve a Marmonte League victory for the host Scorpions (19-3-1, 10-1).

Ventura 2, Rio Mesa 1--Carrie Pulido hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth in a Channel League game at Ventura.

Thousand Oaks 3, Agoura 0--Jennifer Smith (7-2) allowed five singles and struck out eight in a Marmonte League game. Chara Smith, Megan Keesling and Allison Bowman each had two hits.

Canyon 4, Hart 3--Kassi Lemasters hit two home runs, including a two-out solo shot in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and lead Canyon (11-10, 4-3) to a Foothill League victory over Hart (17-6, 5-3).

La Reina 3, Oak Park 0--Jennifer Baltruzak (12-4) threw a one-hitter and extended her Tri-Valley League scoreless-inning streak to 47 for host La Reina (17-5, 7-0).
