North Carolina Greensboro’s Mike Dement received a five-year contract to replace John Shumate as Southern Methodist men’s coach. Shumate resigned last month.

Defending champion John Daly birdied the final hole for his second consecutive 67, a 10-under-par 36-hole total of 134 and a one-shot lead over Jim Gallagher and Michael Bradley in the second round of the BellSouth Classic in Marietta, Ga. Daly did the same last year in winning this event.

Larry Ziegler shot a six-under-par 66 and took the opening-round lead in the Senior PGA Tour’s PaineWebber Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. Graham Marsh and Roger Kennedy were a stroke behind.

Laura Davies shot a bogey-free, eight-under-par 64 and built a three-stroke lead over seven players in the first round of the Sara Lee Classic in Old Hickory, Tenn.

Third-seeded Magnus Larsson edged fellow Swede and boyhood idol Mats Wilander, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and advanced to the semifinals of the AT&T; Challenge in Duluth, Ga. The victory set up a match today with No. 1 Andre Agassi, who defeated Christian Ruud, 6-4, 6-4. Michael Chang, the defending champion and No. 2 seed, ousted Jordi Arrese of Spain, 7-5, 6-3, and will play fourth-seeded Todd Martin, a 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) winner over New Zealand’s Brett Steven.

Defending champion Michael Stich of Germany defeated Sweden’s Stefan Edberg, 6-4, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the BMW Open at Munich, Germany.

Martina Hingis, 14, of Switzerland defeated Judith Wiesner of Austria, 7-6, 6-1, to reach her first WTA semifinal in the Citizen Cup at Hamburg, Germany.
