Fernando Valenzuela gave up a three-run homer to Matt Williams, and Joe Rosselli won his first major league start as the San Francisco Giants handed the San Diego Padres their fifth consecutive loss, 9-2, Friday night at San Diego.

Valenzuela (0-1) gave up six runs, seven hits and three home runs in 4 2/3 innings of his second start for the Padres. The former Dodger has given up eight runs and 13 hits in 9 2/3 innings this season.

Rosselli pitched 5 1/3 innings, yielding one run and four hits in his second big league appearance.

San Franciso drove Valenzuela from the mound in the fifth inning with solo home runs by Royce Clayton and Glenallen Hill. J.R. Phillips hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Giants.

Houston 9, St. Louis 4--Mike Hampton pitched seven scoreless innings as the Astros won at St. Louis for their fifth consecutive victory.

Hampton, who battled flu all week, gave up just three hits, walked none and struck out seven in his second NL start. He threw 83 pitches, 61 of them strikes.

Craig Biggio and Phil Plantier homered for Houston, and Tony Eusebio hit a three-run double.

“Once you get all those runs, it takes the pressure off,” Hampton said. “Runs are a beautiful thing.”

Cardinal Manager Joe Torre was impressed, saying: “We couldn’t get anything off him. You have to give him a lot of credit. And we didn’t stay close enough to be competitive.”

Biggio, who started the season 0 for 19, had three hits, raising his career batting average against St. Louis to .346.

Tom Urbani was the loser.

Philadelphia 9, Atlanta 4--Charlie Hayes hit a three-run homer to power the Phillies’ 12-hit attack at Atlanta, helping rookie right-hander Tyler Green earn his first major league victory.

Mariano Duncan and Dave Gallagher each added three hits for the Phillies, who snapped the Braves’ four-game winning streak.

Green, the Phillies’ No. 1 pick in the June 1991 draft, gave up five hits and three runs in six innings. Kent Mercker took the loss.

Florida 11, Montreal 6--Light-hitting rookie Quilvio Veras hit a grand slam during a six-run fourth inning, and the Marlins held off an Expo rally at Montreal.

Veras, batting .167, had only seven home runs in five minor league seasons, but he homered on reliever Curt Schmidt’s first pitch to give Florida a 7-1 lead.

The Expos closed within 7-6 on a three-run homer by Tony Tarasco in the fifth and a two-run homer by Sean Berry in the sixth.

The Marlins made it 11-6 in the seventh with four consecutive hits off Luis Aquino and a three-base error by left fielder Rondell White.

New York 3, Cincinnati 0--Bobby Jones held the Reds to three hits in eight innings, and Edgardo Alfonzo drove in a pair of runs in the Mets’ rout at Cincinnati.

The Reds, off to one of their worst starts of the century at 1-8, were shut out for the second time in four games. They haven’t scored in 17 innings, collecting just eight hits.

Jones struck out four, walked two and threw 106 pitches in his second consecutive strong outing. John Franco allowed two hits and a walk in the ninth before retiring Benito Santiago on a ground-out for his second save.

Bobby Bonilla homered for the Mets.

Chicago 8, Pittsburgh 4--Scott Bullett, a former Pirate prospect discarded because he wasn’t an extra-base threat, hit a three-run homer--his first in the majors--to help the Cubs end a three-game losing streak and go to 3-0 on the road.

The Pirates stranded 13 runners.

Kevin Foster got the victory despite giving up eight hits, walking three and throwing 100 pitches in only five innings.

Bullett’s homer, only his third extra-base hit in 73 major league at-bats, came off loser Jon Lieber in a four-run fourth inning after Pittsburgh had gone ahead, 3-1, in the third.

All four runs in the fourth were driven in by former Pirates, as Steve Buechele’s RBI single preceded Bullett’s homer. Rick Wilkins also hit a solo homer in the second.
