A judge on Monday sentenced an ex-letter carrier to life in prison without parole for gunning down his former landlord’s stepson, then coming back hours later to kill the older man in front of detectives.

Norwalk Superior Court Judge John A. Torribio imposed the sentence on Gregorio T. Solis, 33, who was convicted last month of killing his friends on Nov. 26, 1991.

A jury found Solis guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Angelito Casall, 44, and second-degree murder for the death of David Castillo, 18.

Deputy Public Defender Donald Prigo said the former U.S. Postal Service employee was having a mental breakdown when he shot the men, whom he blamed for his drug habit.

According to prosecutors, Solis went looking for Casall and shot the teen-ager after he answered the door and said his stepfather wasn’t home.

Later that evening, Solis returned to the Downey home and approached Casall, who was being comforted by neighbors and detectives investigating the death of the teen-ager. Solis pretended to comfort Casall, leading him over to the sidewalk before fatally shooting him.
