Interstate 105 is generally acknowledged to be Los Angeles’ last new freeway. Its construction destroyed neighborhoods from LAX through Watts to Bellflower. But, after a series of lawsuits, it also provided job training, low-cost homes and minority hiring goals.

In 1982, photographer Jeff Gates began documenting the freeway. His “In Our Path” show recently appeared at El Camino College in the South Bay area, where Gates continued to collect questionnaires from people whose lives were affected by the 105. Comments by Gates, who now lives in Maryland, accompany the photographs.
