HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : In a Season Full of Firsts, Calabasas Avoids First Loss

Calabasas completed its first undefeated regular season and captured its first outright Frontier League championship with a 5-2 victory Friday over Santa Clara at Calabasas.

The Coyotes (24-0, 15-0) are expected to be the top-seeded team when the Southern Section Division IV playoff pairings are announced on Monday.

First baseman Darin Reisman hit his third home run of the season and walked twice for Calabasas. Designated hitter Adam Davey went two for three, including a double. Pitcher Jared Sandler (8-0) allowed four hits and struck out six to lower his earned-run average to 1.04.

Nordhoff 6, Malibu 5--Mike Gardia struck out seven, walked none and allowed five hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief as the Rangers (11-11, 7-8) qualified for their first playoff appearance in 14 years with a Frontier League victory over the Sharks (0-21, 0-15) at Malibu.

Miles Robertson, Sean Strben and Tim Greiner each had two hits for Nordhoff, which scored four runs in the second inning.

Santa Paula 6, Moorpark 3--Rocky Frutos pitched a six-hitter, striking out five, as the Cardinals (13-8, 10-5) defeated the Musketeers (8-13, 7-8) in a Frontier League game at Moorpark.

Ventura 4, Oxnard 1--Seth Casey and Robert Verstraeten combined on a one-hitter as the Cougars clinched their first Channel League title since 1987 in a game at Ventura.

Casey allowed one hit, struck out six and walked two in five innings. Verstraeten struck out two and picked up his fifth save.

Rio Mesa 7, Santa Barbara 2--Manuel Chavira (9-1) won his ninth consecutive decision and hit a two-out, three-run double to ignite a six-run sixth inning for the Spartans in a Channel League game at Santa Barbara. Chavira had seven strikeouts and only one walk in 5 2/3 innings. The only run came on a home run by Josh Parker in the fourth.

Albert Ambriz had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs. The Spartans (17-6, 10-4 in league play), by virtue of a coin flip earlier in the day, earned the No. 2 spot for the playoffs.

Dos Pueblos 9, Hueneme 3--Pitcher and shortstop Josh Towers went four for four and first baseman Robert Avila had two hits for Hueneme (12-14, 4-10) in a Channel League game at Hueneme. Towers (5-7) took the loss.

Buena 4, San Marcos 2--The Bulldogs (14-9, 7-7) finished with four consecutive Channel League victories, but did not make the Division II playoffs because there are no at-large berths available.

Westlake 7, Channel Islands 3--Todd Kostjuk and Corey Kling each had two hits, including back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning for Westlake (19-6, 9-5) in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands. Matt Riordan also homered for the Warriors, who finished in a four-way tie for second in the league.

Bill Treese pitched five innings, picking up the victory.

Highland 7, Burroughs 5--Robert Reeves singled in two of his four RBIs in the decisive sixth inning to lead the Bulldogs to a Golden League victory at Highland. Kevin Wright added three hits, including a solo home run in the fifth for the Bulldogs (8-15, 4-6).

Sophomore Dan O’Haver (1-1) recorded his first varsity victory, striking out five, allowing one hit and no walks in three innings.

Camarillo 23, Agoura 6--The Scorpions exploded for a season-high 23 hits, including five home runs, in a Channel League victory at Agoura.

Outfielders Joe Borchard and Matt Buttell each hit two home runs and catcher Mike Muller went three for five with six RBIs for Camarillo (17-8, 9-5).

Paraclete 9, Rosamond 6--Robbie Wood collected two hits, scored three runs and hit a two-run homer for the Spirits (15-7, 9-1) in a High Desert League victory at Paraclete.

Carpinteria 10, St. Bonaventure 5--The Warriors scored seven times in the fourth inning in a Tri-Valley League game at Carpinteria.

Jake Brown hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Les Ybara went four for four for the Seraphs (10-8, 6-6).

Campbell Hall 10, Faith Baptist 7--Andreas Fehrle hit a game-winning two-run single in the sixth to put the Vikings (12-8, 5-5) on top in a Delphic League game at Campbell Hall.

Judd Granzow hit a grand slam in the fourth for Faith Baptist.

Montclair Prep 10, Village Christian 2--Brandon Michaels’ three-run double in the fourth inning gave the Mounties a nonleague victory at Montclair Prep. Joe Cohen (4-1) scattered six hits, walked two and struck out five for the Mounties (15-7).
