Scyphers and Simi Valley Could Be Flipped Out Today

Share

Mike Scyphers, whose 17 seasons at Simi Valley High have included eight league titles and two trips to Southern Section championship games, could have his tenure with the Pioneers ended today on a coin flip.

Or maybe not.

Because of a difference of interpretation of the tie-breaker rules in the Marmonte League, a tie between Simi Valley (17-9, 9-5 in league play) and Westlake (19-6, 9-5) for the third playoff spot will be decided at a meeting of the principals at 9:30 a.m. today at Camarillo High.

Royal, Simi Valley, Westlake and Camarillo finished in a four-way tie for second place. Regardless of which tie-breaker is used--that’s the debate at today’s meeting--Royal will finish second and Camarillo will finish fifth and out of the playoffs.

The tie between Simi Valley and Westlake will either be broken by a coin toss or Simi Valley will take third because the Pioneers beat Westlake twice during the regular season.

Scyphers announced this week that he has been forced to resign, effective at the end of the season. The Pioneers began Friday needing a victory to clinch a share of Scyphers’ ninth league title, but lost, 7-6, to Thousand Oaks, which took the title.
